Blooms profusely for 6 months straight 🙌 Hardly any plants dance as well as Gaura ‘Whirling Butterflies’/ Oenothera lindheimeri, plus its drought tolerant, low maintenance & beloved by bumble bees. It’s the PERECT planter plant IMO! I fell in love with Gaura ‘Whirling Butterflies’ in 2018 & have been planting it in my planters every year since. It blooms from June to frost with an abundance of small delicate flowers help atop tall 3’ wispy stems that float in the slightest breeze – the effect is mesmerizing! Its see through effect ensures it never takes up too much space visually either. There are other shorter varieties of Gaura, but the taller Whirling Butterflies is my absolute fav 🌸 Oenothera lindheimeri is a North American native species hailing from sunny Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. Its generally well-behaved/ not invasive in northern garden situations but as with any plant, sometimes when its planted outside of its native range it can become invasive. This is why you should always check your areas invasive species list before adding any new plant to your garden. It IS invasive in California so please don’t plant it if you live there! This Gaura is labeled as hardy in planting zones 5- 9, but I find its more like a zone 6 plant. It doesn’t overwinter here in these planters, but I have had success overwintering Gaura in my unheated garage where I live in planting zone 5. But at a friend of mines cottage not very far from me, her Gaura Whirling Butterflies has survived in the ground for many years, so it is possible in certain situations To the Gaura fans old & new , welcome – so happy to have you here! DIY planters 🪚 . If you’ve been following my garden revamp you’ll know I’ve built lots of these planters & each time I get asked how. I’ve written step by step guides for each type except this slat design (that I also used on my decking build earlier in the year). I’ll write this one up too with lots of pics and details for you to scroll through and zoom in on, but in the meantime here’s an overview of the process. It really is that simple. . The only step I haven’t shown here is where I screwed the frame into the posts on the wall behind to make sure it doesn’t move when planted up and heavy! .
