Broad beans have being sown in our growing tunnels this morning 🌱 Over the next few weeks, our bedding tunnels will be filling up, getting ready for a colourful and productive spring. We grow around 80% of the bedding and vegetable plants you’ll see for sale here throughout spring and summer - carefully nurtured from seed right here on site. They’ll be wheeled down fresh each day, so you can be sure you’re taking home the very best quality plants from our garden centre. And as you can see, seed sowing really can be as simple as that. So why not give growing your own a go this year? 🪴 We’ve got everything you need to get started - compost, seeds, trays and all the tools to kickstart your growing season.

Seeds to Sow in March! 🍅🫛🥔🌱 Spring is almost here! 🌱🌼 and with it, lots more options for seeds we can now sow for the vegetable garden…🙌🏻 The first has to be tomatoes! 😊🍅 They will need heat to germinate effectively at this time of year though so I use a heat mat and propagator, and once they have produced their first true leaves I pot them up into 9cm pots, keep them protected until after my last frost date which is May for me. Then there’s peas 🫛 that are really easy to grow and have to be one of my favourite things to eat straight from the garden and my favourite variety is ‘Blauschokker’. You can pre soak them to speed up germination but you don’t have to. And I sow them two peas per module. 🌱 When the plants are around 3-4 inches I transplant them into a growing bed and just ensure I give them something to climb. The next is Potatoes 🥔 that are really easy to grow too, I chit them (sprout them) prior to planting, on a windowsill but you don’t have to, and then I sow them at a towels depth into a growing bed and then cover over making sure they’re at least a few inches deep, you may need to mound them up, or add a little more mulch once the plants emerge to ensure sunlight does not reach the growing potatoes. Radish is really easy to grow from seed and crops within around 30 days. 🌱 I multi sow them, so add 3-4 seeds per module, give them a bit of water and within no time you’ll have radish seedlings popping up. Other things you can sow this month: Indoors/Under Cover: Tomatoes, chillies, sweet peppers, aubergines, cucumbers, celery, celeriac, and globe artichokes. Direct Outdoors: Broad beans, peas, parsnips, carrots, beetroot, spinach, summer cabbage, leeks, lettuce, salad leaves, radish, Swiss chard, and turnips. Herbs: Parsley, coriander, and dill can be sown. Roots/Tubers: Plant garlic, shallots, and early potatoes (second half of March). Flowers: Start half-hardy annuals such as Cosmos and sweet peas indoors. So what have you been sowing so far this month? 😊🌱 #gardeningtips #vegetablegarden #growyourown

Here’s my list of what I recommend planting here in Central Florida in February Please don’t forget to check things like: soil temperature requirements for germination, sun requirements, seed planting depth and for the love of not wasting seeds keep those seeds moist during germination 💚 A lot of these warmer season seeds germinate at a higher rate in warm soil temperatures. Most will tolerate 65°F but germinate best at 80-85°F. Definitely check your varieties for specifics. If getting a head start (like I do) on these seeds that need warm soil temps to germinate, I recommend starting them indoors, in a greenhouse or on a heat mat). Seeds starting list: Beans Beets Blue Pea Flower (Clitoria) Borage Corn (I wait until March and direct sow) Cranberry hibiscus Cucumber Eggplants English Peas Garden Huckleberries Heat tolerant herbs or any other herbs you don’t mind going to seed: I’ve found Oregano, mint, rosemary, sage, and thyme to be very heat tolerant. Basil, Dill, and Fennel will go to seed this Summer. Plant in partial shade for more warm season longevity. Luffa (I like to start these as early as possible in the season!) Melons including Watermelons Nasturtiums Onions (bunching) Peas Peppers Pumpkins and other Squashes Potatoes (All Types) Radish Roselle and Cranberry Hibiscus Sunflowers Sweet potatoes Swiss Chard Tomatoes Turnips Winged Beans It’s cold here now, but if this year is anything like years past, it will be warming up fast. Started plants: The following list you can either buy well started transplants and get them in the ground within the next couple of weeks or (like me) hold off on them all together and start seeds for these again in Fall: Brassicas (kale, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels) Celery Fennel Lettuces #seedstarting #zone9garden #garden #floridagardening

Seeds to Sow in February 😊🌱🫘 After a long winter, It’s finally time to get back out into the green house and start sowing seeds again 😊🙌 some for early crops and some longer season varieties that need plenty of time to produce fruit! So, here are the varieties I sow in February and how I sow them… First it’s the heat loving plants, Chilli’s and Aubergine’s 🌶🍆 Here in the UK and similar climates they both take a long time to produce fruit, so it’s good to get them started off early, but they will need some form of heat and protection to germinate properly, a heat mat with grow lights would be ideal, but a propagation box on a sunny windowsill is a good budget friendly option. The next is Lettuce 🥬 Many varieties are cold hardy so I start sowing mine around mid month to ensure I have a nice supply of early leaves. I sow them into seed trays and then plant some in the green house and some outside, but under the protection of a fleece cover, in case of a hard frost. Then Onions 🧅 Most may grow them from sets, but they are easy to grow from seed. I multisow mine 4 seeds per module to maximise yields and plant them out together. I also find that onions sown from seed are less prone to bolting and they store much better too. And Broad beans 🫘 If you haven’t overwintered your broad beans, now is a great time to sow them for a nice crops of pods in late spring to early summer, if you have limited space why not try field beans instead which are essential a more compact version. This month I’ll also be sowing radish, peas, spinach and violas, so let me know what you’ll be sowing and for more tips and guides throughout the growing season, you can now join my free newsletter 😊🌱📧 there’s a link in my profile bio. #gardeningtips #vegetablegarden #sowingseeds

Peas are made for cool weather. In Zone 6B, we typically sow peas from late February through early April, as soon as the soil can be worked. Direct sowing is best—peas prefer to grow where they’re planted. Give them a simple trellis, keep soil evenly moist, and harvest often. Cool air brings the sweetness, and steady picking keeps the vines flowering until warm weather takes over. #bucktownseed #howtogrow #seedstarting #vegetablegarden #growyourown

Garden Peas: Sprouts to Peas in About Two Months…GrownByYou Garden, English, and Snap Peas sprout, grow, flower, and mature ripe pea pods with 4–10 peas inside in 55 to 70 days, depending on variety.🌿 Bush and dwarf varieties have the earliest harvests, while pole varieties are heavy producers that take longer to mature.🌿 All types of garden peas are cool-season vegetables that should be planted in early spring after soils warm to 40°F (10°C) in average, cold-winter climates, or in autumn in mild-winter and reverse-season climates.🌿 Pea lovers should plant sequences, 2–3 weeks apart until three growing months remain in the season.🌿 Get planting, germination, care, and harvest information at this link: https://grownbyyou.com/vegetables/peas-garden-english-or-snap-vine-bush-super-sweet-pod/ GrownByYou: We’re All About How.℠ #peas #gardenpeas #Englishpeas #snappeas #bushpeas #polepeas #peavines #peagermination #peaharvest #plantingpeas #plantingideas
