LET’S TALK ABOUT ⬇️ Two key terms every writer should know: plot and story. They might sound similar, but they play different roles in your narrative. —— BUT FIRST If you haven’t seen me before - I’m Elin 👋 I share daily writing tips to help YOU write YOUR STORIES 📖 ➡️ Find FREE resources in link in bio 🫶 let’s be writing buddies 👉 follow @notetrail for writing tips and inspiration 💌 Save for later —— Story: The Heart of Your Tale The story is the essence of your narrative—it’s what happens to your characters. This includes their journey, the setting, conflicts, and the underlying theme. Think of the story as the backbone, giving your narrative depth and meaning. How to Use This: * Focus on Character Growth: Make sure your story shows how your characters change over time. * Establish a Theme: Decide on the message or insight you want to convey. Plot: The Structure of Your Narrative The plot is all about how you present the story. It’s the sequence of events you choose to show your readers, with a focus on cause and effect. In simple terms, it’s how you arrange the action to keep things interesting. How to Use This: * Map It Out: Outline key events, from the beginning to the resolution. * Build Suspense: Arrange events to create tension and keep readers hooked. Up your plot game👇🏻 (Also hi, I’m Megan. I coach writers through developing and outlining stronger stories. Follow for daily strategies 💛) The biggest problem I see in manuscripts I edit (especially non-fantasy/sci fi genres) is *no* plot. Characters are struggling internally, but externally nothing is really happening. They talk at restaurants, they go to work, they talk at the park, they get coffee and those scenes are okay for a sit-com, but in a story, there needs to be a story. You wouldn’t rush home to tell your husband about the coffee you got that morning... ...unless something unexpected happened. *As you develop your plot, think about:* - Apart from my character’s internal struggle, what are 2-3 interesting or unusual things that could happen to them? Maybe it’s a unique job opportunity, a surprise trip, a new friend who invites them to do something outside their comfort zone - Don’t be afraid to brainstorm out-there options without judging them What’s the CRAZIEST thing that could happen? Even if you’re writing a romance or a literary novel where the emphasis is on the characters, how can you get more creative with what goes on? Don’t be afraid to play a little! Novels (especially if you want them to get published) need interesting characters AND interesting plots. —— Follow @megan.maclaine for daily strategies to develop and outline a stronger story 💛

Every great story follows a structure. Once you understand the elements of a story, reading and analyzing literature becomes much easier. This Story Map explains the essential components that shape every narrative. From characters and setting to plot and conflict, these elements help readers understand how a story develops and why it leaves an impact. 🔹 Characters are the people in a story. They may be static, dynamic, flat, or round depending on how they change throughout the narrative. 🔹 Setting tells us where and when the story takes place. It creates the atmosphere and background of the narrative. 🔹 Point of View determines who is telling the story. It may be first person, second person, or third person narration. 🔹 Plot is the sequence of events in a story. It usually follows a clear structure known as the Plot Diagram. The plot typically includes: • Exposition – introduction of characters and setting • Rising Action – events leading to the main conflict • Climax – the most intense and important moment • Falling Action – events after the climax • Resolution – how the story ends 🔹 Theme is the central message or lesson of the story. 🔹 Conflict is the problem that drives the story forward. It may be: • Person vs Person • Person vs Self • Person vs Environment • Person vs Technology Understanding these elements helps readers analyze literature, improve storytelling, and appreciate narratives more deeply. Whether you are a student, literature lover, or competitive exam aspirant, mastering the story map is the first step to understanding storytelling.
