On This Day: February 18 – Discovery of Pluto Announced (1930) The Lowell Observatory in Arizona announced the discovery of Pluto after astronomer Clyde Tombaugh identified it on photographic plates weeks earlier. The finding confirmed the existence of a ninth planet beyond Neptune. In 2006, Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet. A memory from the historical record. #OnThisDay #Pluto #Astronomy #SpaceHistory #solarsystem

🗓️ TODAY IN HISTORY On February 18th, 1930, American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh made one of the greatest discoveries in modern astronomy at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. Tasked with searching for the hypothetical “Planet X,” Tombaugh used a device called a blink comparator, which rapidly alternated between two photographs of the same region of sky taken days apart. While most stars remained fixed, he noticed a faint speck shifting position—evidence of a distant moving object. After weeks of verification, the object was confirmed as a new planet, later named Pluto. Its discovery captured global attention and expanded the known boundaries of the solar system for the first time in nearly a century, marking a triumph of patience, precision, and human curiosity. #chronicles #facts #spaceexploration #pluto #astronomy [History, Trivia, Knowledge, Chronicler, Fact, event , hidden, Pluto, Planets, Solar System, Space ]

On February 18, 1930, Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto while working at the Lowell Observatory in the United States. Tombaugh identified Pluto by comparing photographic plates taken days apart and noticing a tiny object that moved against the background stars. At the time, Pluto was celebrated as the ninth planet of the solar system, fulfilling the long-standing search for a predicted “Planet X.” For more than 75 years, Pluto held planetary status and became a familiar part of textbooks and popular culture. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet, after redefining what qualifies as a planet. Although it lost its planetary title, Pluto remains one of the most fascinating objects in the solar system, especially after NASA’s New Horizons flyby in 2015 revealed its complex surface, atmosphere, and geology. Pluto didn’t disappear — only our definition changed. #Pluto #SpaceHistory #astronomy #Past365 #SolarSystem

#PlutoDay is celebrated annually on February 18 to commemorate the discovery of Pluto by Clyde Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory in 1930. It marks the date this icy, dwarf planet was first identified, subsequently transforming our understanding of the outer solar system. NASA's New Horizons spacecraft was the first to explore Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. Launched on January 19, 2006, the spacecraft successfully executed close flybys of Jupiter on February 28, 2007. It was the first spacecraft to explore Pluto up close, flying by the dwarf planet and its moons on July 14, 2015. New Horizons gathered the data to create this composite image in 2015. The heart-shaped feature is now called #TombaughRegio. Pluto's Heart Broken 💔 Pluto was reclassified from a planet to a "dwarf planet" on August 24, 2006. #CraterCouting When NASA’s New Horizons probe flew by Pluto, it captured amazing picture of an enormous icy plain in the shape of a heart. Six months later, we learned that the heart was no more than ten million years old, which is like yesterday compared to Pluto’s four and a half billion year history. What’s even more amazing is that we only know this because astronauts brought a bunch of rocks home from the Moon almost fifty years ago. In fact, any time we’ve figured out the age of a surface in the Solar System, it’s thanks to those moon rocks. Crater counting is a method or perhaps the principal tool used by astrogeologists for estimating the surface ages of planets, their moons and even large asteroids throughout the solar system. Today is Pluto Day- the little planet that probably has a bit of an identity crisis. I remember growing up being taught that we had 9 planets, and for a long time it confused me why Pluto was demoted, but I understand now. Just the fact that its moon Charons orbital point isn't inside Pluto, but just outside so technically they orbit each other is enough for me to understand why it was reclassified. 📚🚀✨ #plutoday #dwarfplanet #spaceexploration🪐☄️🛰️🚀
