ℍ𝕠𝕨 𝕋𝕠 𝕋𝕖𝕒𝕔𝕙: 𝑺𝑻𝑨𝑵𝑫 Teaching a dog to STAND sounds pretty simple, right?! They are always standing after all. Many assist their dog by physically lifting their hind end from a sit/down position, into a stand. However, you can quickly shape this behavior, just by using a “Hand Target,” making this a fast and fun trick to learn! STEPS: 1) Position your dog beside you, and have them sit. Offer your dog a “Hand Target” in front of them, so they have to lift their bottom off the ground. 2) Mark the behavior as soon as they stand. Throw a treat out in front of them to reward. (Throwing a treat keeps the game fun, and prevents them from sitting back down.) 3) Make sure to practice on both sides of you. The left, and the right. 4) Add in a verbal cue while still using the “Hand Target.” I use STAND. 5) Drop the “Hand Target,” and ask using only your verbal cue. 6) Practice with your dog in front of you as well. Start with the “Hand Target,” and verbal cue. Then drop the target. Extra: Practice from a down position as well. I am not a professional dog trainer, and there are many ways to teach any behavior.
