Most clothes today are made from blended materials. Synthetic and natural fibers clothes are blended together. That may sound like innovation and it is to a degree. But once these materials are fused together, they become incredibly difficult to separate and recycle. Polyester breaks down into microplastics and even nanoplastics that enter soil, water, food and our bodies. And when these textiles reach landfill, they mix with food waste and other materials. Polyester doesn’t decompose, and within these waste piles it can slow or even choke natural decomposition, limiting the oxygen that organic materials need to break down properly. So this stops being just a fashion problem. It becomes a systems problem.
