Guess we all need a bit of pink ponying around. As usual Dumfries Community Choir bring a bit of sunshine to the heat wave. Featuring the pink pony on Dumfries High Street.

I get asked this a lot, so here’s how I start: 1️⃣ Both horses need to trust you , and they both need to know the basics, the lead horse in the saddle and the pony horse from the ground, from different angles: forward, back, left, right. You can get away with just forward for a while, but it’ll catch up with you eventually. 2️⃣ Make sure your halt is a real halt. I use cookies in the beginning to reinforce the halt. My horses get a cookie only when they stand still nicely. They learn this fast. 3️⃣ Safety first: never tie your pony horse to your lead horse or to yourself. And never, ever wrap the lead rope around your hand. Start small, in the arena, and gradually increase the distance. Possibly the most magical first ride ever ✨🌲 To be clear, I’m NOT recommending everyone to just jump on a new horse bareback & see what happens. I know Stella’s history & she’s had a lot of training in the past, plus I’ve put quite a few trail miles on her ponying with Retta so I had a good idea of how she’d react. That being said, so much of horse training is setting them up emotionally. I’be been prioritizing ponying since I’m hopeful Stella will be my main backcountry pack horse, but another reason I haven’t ridden her yet was that I wanted to establish a positive & confident association with going out on the trails together. This ride was definitely a testament to that mindset paying off! Thanks again Sophie for such a special day ❤️

Ponying on the trail = double the fun, double the training! Today I took my ever so steady Eddie Bentley out for a ride while ponying Rose my client horse and it’s one of my favorite ways to build skills. Ponying keeps the second horse fit, teaches them to handle all the sights and sounds of the trail, and boosts their confidence by following a steady partner.It’s also a great way to work two horses at once (and yes, my arms get a workout too 💪). Ponying youngsters 🐴🏔️🌲🌞💖 🌄 After the sunset walk with Spur, join us for a sunrise ride with our @wildhorse_outreach_advocacy Ambassador Mustangs and two greenies, Juniper and Rock! More info in video! 🐴 Ponying is one great training tool among others that I like to use as we work towards riding or packing. I start once a Mustang is fairly comfortable with being approached, handled as well as with leading and lunging at all gaits from the ground 🌍 We start in a small round pen, then venture out to larger, safely fenced areas and navigate some obstacles. Once that works well, we go out, still on a fenced property. After that, the world is our canvas and we go exploring for real. First close-by, then we trailer out 🏔️ This is the first bigger ponying adventure for Rock, and one of the first and likely the longest and most intense for @taylorturner3 's DG Juniper whom she adopted from us as a weanling and has done a great job with. ⁉️ Questions, input, your own ponying experiences?
