Why are portion sizes IMPORTANT? ⬇️ Learning portion sizes can help you reach your protein intake DAILY! Portion sizes are a great way to know how to maintain, gain or lose weight! For a fully developed Adult the size of your palm ( fish is another story ) but in most meats it’s equivalent to 26g of protein ! How did I figure this out? I DIVIDED 26g by 2 = 13g of protein, brought out my ruler, and found 1/2 aka 13g of 26g leads all the way up to the highest line of my middle finger! Divided 13g by 2 = 6.5g of protein. 26+6.5= 32.5g MY GOAL PER MEAL so I would make sure my Protein Portions were at LEAST reaching the lowest line of my ring finger, nothing less. Now a way we can know how much we need to consume is by dividing our goal by the amount of meals we consume DAILY! Example: goal: 130g of protein DIVIDE by X meals = total protein you MUST consume PER MEAL PLEASE NOTE! It is NOT recommended to consume more than 50g of protein per meal unless you are a body builder! There are actually a couple of research papers that compared the serving sizes that were originally on offer to modern day options. When looking at popular brands, a lot of products have options that are 2-5 times bigger than they used to be. For example, an original hamburger from the 1950s may still be on sale today, but it is now considered a ‘small’. Similar themes are seen across a lot of food products, from fast food burgers and fries to chocolate bars. You can also see it in drinks like beers and sodas. It was also observed that American portion sizes were often bigger than those available in Europe. For example, the first time I travelled to America, a lot of the appetisers were what I would consider main course size. It is believed that we may become accustomed to these larger portion sizes, and over time we just habitually get used to eating more food. We all want our sweet treats (I know I do!🙋‍♀️), but excess calories = unwanted weight gain, and it's easy to go overboard on these calorie-dense treats. But that doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself! It just means you need to be mindful and moderate your intake. Chips, cookies, candy, and the like all come with a nutrition label that suggests a serving size. That portion size may look smaller than what you're used to eating, and that’s because these foods are specifically designed to hit the ‘bliss point’—a perfect balance of salt, sugar, and fat to maximize pleasure and encourage us to keep eating long after we've passed the recommended serving. But if you can stick to the suggested portion, you can totally fit these treats into your day without guilt! That being said, you should usually aim to have just one serving of a treat per day, not multiple. Even when you're sticking to the recommended portions, having several treats adds up quickly! (Most servings are between 150-220 calories—now multiply that by 3! That’s a lot in a day.) Remember, the 80/20 rule!
