Short answer: Because browsers enforce security rules that Postman does not. Explain like I’m 5 years old: 1. Postman is allowed to ask freely. 2. Browsers must follow safety rules. 3. Some requests are blocked to protect users. 4. The server must say “this is allowed.” 5. Otherwise the browser stops it. Correct explanation (engineer-level, simplified): Browsers enforce CORS to prevent malicious websites from accessing sensitive data. When a web app makes a cross-origin request, the browser may send a preflight OPTIONS request to verify what is allowed. If the server does not explicitly permit the origin, headers, or methods, the browser blocks the request locally. Postman does not enforce these rules because it is not acting on behalf of an untrusted web page. This means the API itself is often working correctly, but the browser is intentionally preventing access for security reasons. Authentication, cookies, HTTPS requirements, and headers behave differently in browser contexts. Key engineering trade-offs: * Security vs developer convenience * Controlled access vs open APIs * Browser safety vs flexibility Why this matters: Many “API bugs” are actually browser security features. Understanding this avoids misdiagnosing backend issues.
