A Day in the Life of a Postulant, featuring Miss Mackenzie! Postulancy is the first stage of formation in our community. A postulant lives at the Motherhouse and participates in our perpetual adoration and community life. She serves in housework and hospitality while taking classes taught by the Sisters. In this time of transition, classes are focused on human formation and self-knowledge. A postulant is led to a deeper understanding of the call to religious life and her free response in love. When I left the Carmelite monastery after spending one year there as a postulant, I was absolutely convinced I’d be in another religious community within a few months. I LOVED being in religious life, my only struggle was the solitude of Carmel and the growing desire I had for some form of ministry. So when I left, I was sure it was just a matter of finding a community that had some type of ministry I felt drawn to, and I’d be back on the path to becoming a Sister. After months of searching and finding that there were pretty much only cloistered or fully active options for female communities, neither of which I felt drawn to, I was shattered. I got very depressed, and I think that’s when the post-discerning-out of Carmel really hit me since prior to that, I thought I had a clear path laid out to the next convent. I felt like I was starting from scratch, while all my friends were going into their senior year of college, dating, etc. Thankfully, that low time was of short duration, and now I have a husband who is wonderfully supportive of my love for Carmel, and always encouraging me in my efforts to bring it into life in our home. It is such a joy to realize that I CAN still live simply, quietly, low-technology, centered on the liturgical year, praying the divine office, surrounded by religious art, loving Jesus as the Bridegroom of my soul…so many of the beautiful things of Carmel, right in my own home and life as a wife and mother. While i was in the convent, someone asked me what my favorite part of being a postulant was & I answered that my favorite part was giving God absolutely everything, holding nothing back from Him. But the truth was that I was willing to say yes to Him in everything, except in one thing: I refused to ask Him if it was His will for me to leave. I refused to discern fully, I had already made up my mind to live, serve, and die for Him in the convent. So in prayer, when He would bring it up, I would refuse to think about it, let alone bring it to prayer, because I was afraid of what He’d say. When I finally did, I was surprised to find His answer full of peace. I knew His will & had to leave even if it didn’t make sense to me, the sisters, or my superior, but I knew I had to act. If I had chosen to stay, God out of His abundant mercy would still have figured out a way to help me become a saint, but my disobedience would have been telling God that my will was better than His, that I only wanted to follow His will if it aligned with mine or the idea that I had about what following His will usually looked like. That my obedience was conditional on my understanding of His will. Mary’s fiat didn’t make sense to anyone around her, but her obedience to Gods will when it didn’t make sense, when it didn’t follow the “typical” course of what following Gods will looks like, allowed God to act in unimaginable ways. If there’s anything I’ve learned from the saints, it’s that we are on this earth to do His will, to please Him in everything, & in the end the only person who it needs to make sense to is Him, He knows what He’s doing. If we want God to act in our lives in incomprehensible ways, help us have incomprehensible trust, incomprehensible faith, incomprehensible hope, we have to be obedient to His will especially when it’s incomprehensible. After I left, people would remark that my having discerned out was “unfortunate”, but since when is following Gods will “unfortunate”? its only ever “unfortunate” for one person: the devil. #catholic

This documentary tells the story of the first 11 women ordained into the priesthood in 1974. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the ordination of women in The Episcopal Church, St. Paul’s is hosting a screening of this fascinating documentary! It is also fitting as our parish is sending a woman, Katelyn Printz- postulant to the priesthood, to Seminary this fall!
