Hotel Room Practice #1 : Paganini Caprice No. 24 (Final Coda) Was looking for something to warm up with this morning and came across some flute videos online featuring these wild arpeggios. Turns out they’re from the final movement of Paganini’s Caprices. I decided to give it a try. I find those diminished spread triads particularly fascinating. When you displace the second note of a diminished chord upward you get this cascading, sheets-of-sound effect that feels right at home in the aesthetics of the 19th century…yet somehow still fresh and modern today. Who says we can’t bring it into our own time? 🙂 Also I’m playing on the brand-new Europa headjoint from @powellflutes and it’s an absolute powerhouse✨ There’s a certain darkness and depth in the sound that feels endlessly inspiring…like a whole new world of colour waiting to be uncovered. The response is alive, flexible and it allows me to sculpt a rich palette of harmonics that adds real depth and dimension to the sound. It’s rare to find a piece of equipment that instantly expands your musical imagination but this one truly does. Practicing at home the incredible Nielsen clarinet concerto! I’ll perform it in May in Hong Kong with the @hksinfonietta and @olarielts ✨ Always a great challenge to play it: first on the technical side because of its difficulty (25min of every kind of extreme difficulty for a clarinetist 😵), and of course on the musical side because it takes a lot of time to understand the deep complexity that runs through this masterpiece.
