DEATH GRIP… On the jungle floor a False-crowned boa (Pseudoboa coronata) and Spectacled tegu (Gymnophthalmus underwoodi) battle it out! It’s rare that I encounter snake predation events. Rarer still when the prey animal has so recently been captured! I observed the scene for several minutes until eventually the snake disappeared underground with the lizard in grip which was still biting repeatedly refusing to submit. Ultimate underwater predators 🐼 WARNING ⚠️: Graphic content Watching a pod of orcas predating on a baby humpback whale, is the most magnificent display of sheer #power, intelligence, team work, determination and raw #nature that I have ever witnessed. On this day, I was fortunate to accompany the team at @orcasmexico @erick.higuera to document and study the beahavior of Malinche’s pod, a #orca family specialized in hunting cetaceans and who call the pacific coast of #Mexico home. After encountering the pod at 730am, and photoID confirming that in fact was #Malinche pod, we accompany them from a safe distance. At 4pm things heated up: a baby humpback whale breach in the horizon, was followed by a high speed chase by of 12-13 orcas, including some baby ones. After just few minutes, the pod eventually caught up with mum, calf and male humpback escort. The first thing that happened then, was the escort disappearing into the blue, leaving mum and calf fending for themselves. What followed, was the most brutal, coordinated and merciless display of raw nature, as the pod relentlessly charged to separate the calf from the mum, while she desperately tried to protect her. After literally five minutes of non-stop harassment from the pod, #humpback mum could not do more and the calf finally gave up… Now that the orcas had their trophy, for the next hours, we witnessed a heart breaking sequence: while humpback mum stayed swimming in circles in the exact location, grieving the lost of her calf (you could feel her distress and grieve on each of her breaths), just fifty meters away, the pod of orcas took turns to feed on the tongue and lower jaw of the calf, feeding the smaller members and teaching them how it is done: while one holds the calf tail, another dives (literally) into the calf’s mouth to tear a piece of flesh apart. The pod passed the carcass to one another for few hours, enjoying their catch of the day, something essential when orcas too have to feed your young everyday, that’s the circle of life… Thank you #mothernature for these #unforgettable moments (shot under permit) #predation #killerwhale #apexpredator #underwaterworld #natureismetal #pelayosalinas

Two of my favorite animals, both fighting for survival; one needs to eat, one needs to escape... What surprises me most about this footage is just how relaxed the hammer seems in the shallows. We know they hunt in shallow water, but wow, the sheer casualness of the hammers turn really surprises me. Even lemon sharks who are incredibly comfortable with their backs out of the water, don’t look this relaxed! I wonder why the hammer is so chill? Experience? or is he/she slowing down to amplify his/her vision and hearing? Simply halting power to help refocus and home back in on the rays location? 🤔 Food for thought, literally. Colorado desert sidewinder (Crotalus cerastes laterorepens) predating on a zebra tail lizard (Callisaurus draconoides)! This was such a neat observation from a few years back. I was talking about this encounter with a buddy recently and decided that it was something worth sharing here with you guys as well. While out doing flat tail horned lizard research I came across this neonate sidewinder that was lucky enough to start life with a nice big zebra tail lizard as a meal. The zebra tail, however, didn't go down without a fight and I was lucky enough to catch its final attempt at freedom on video. I got to say I was extremely impressed with this little sidewinder, and hope that it went on living and is still having a great life in the sand dunes of Arizona. #sidewinder #rattlesnake #predation #wildlife #natureismetal @natureismetal
