With so many folks questioning why we still celebrate Pride Month I just wanted to share why it still matters. For one, nearly 600 pieces of anti-LGBT legislation have been introduced this year alone. The administration is cutting health services and working to erase our history. But it’s not just that. Most of you know me as a former Ambassador who married the love of his life and works to elect Presidents. But 40 years ago I was a sad young man who didn’t believe he would ever amount to anything in this world and felt isolated and alone. And while I made it out thanks to decades of support from family and friends, so many others aren’t as lucky. And there are countless people like me. Young people who hear every word the President or the Supreme Court says and feel unwelcome in their schools, workplaces and homes. And I celebrate Pride for them. We still celebrate to show all people young and old who don’t feel like they have a place in this world that in fact they do have a community who is there for them. Great movie to watch over the holiday weekend — “Pride” is one of those feel-good stories that actually means something. Set against the backdrop of the 1984 miners’ strike, it follows a group of LGBTQ+ activists who decide to support a Welsh mining community, and what unfolds is equal parts funny, heartfelt, and genuinely uplifting. What makes it work so well is how natural it all feels; the humour lands effortlessly, and the emotional moments never feel forced. There’s a real warmth running through the film, helped massively by performances from Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Andrew Scott and Dominic West to name but a few, each bringing something memorable without ever overshadowing the ensemble. It’s one of those films that reminds you how powerful community can be, especially when unlikely worlds come together.
