DEBUNKING: can you mix water based foundations with silicone based primers? The answer is, YES. So many people seem to believe that you cannot mix “water-based” foundations with silicone based primers and vice versa because of pilling, and that the solution is to stick to like as formulas (i.e. silicone primer with silicone foundation & water-based primers with water-based foundations). I am here to tell you this is NOT always a problem and this is NOT always a great solution! The best advice is to understand YOUR own skin to drive your product purchases. Primers should be looked at through a very skin type specific lens, and you should add them to your routine if you are looking for significant improvement for something your skin needs. If you are happy with how your skin looks, feels, and lasts while wearing your complexion product, that means you may not even need to add primer to your routine! (Yes, that means some folks may not even need primer AT ALL!). Folks with dry skin for example may find that silicone on top of silicone is too drying for their already dry skin. That in turn can lead to flaking or pilling in itself, NOT the combinations of the two different formulas. In the case of dryness like that, a water-based hydrating primer, like @LauraMercier for example, would help with product lay down. Hydrating primers like this one are not all that different from moisturizer and can absolutely be paired with a silicone based foundation, like @HausLabs, as I demonstrate here in this video. (Note however, as lam oily, I prefer using the Laura Mercier blurring primer which is also water based). Oily folks would actually benefit more from a silicone based primer, but that doesn’t mean they have to use a silicone based foundation if they choose not to. Let me know if you want me to make a part two on this, I do understand it’s quite the complicated topic. But truthfully sometimes finding the products that work for you is more to do with understanding your skin type, then trial and error.
