Running printers yourself can be struggle but hey it’s a thin line between love & hate 😂❤️- Ok so here is a quick break down of pros & cons printing art in-house! I’ve been printing in-house for the last 7 years- basically the entire time since I’ve been a full time artist, this has been A HUGE part of my business and a very lucrative (and stressful lol) part of my business. I have four 42 inch HP designjet 800 PS , and two 42 inch HP designjet Z3200, and one 24 inch Epson SC-T3170. I have spent thousands on these printers and even more money on their repairs! First I would say to only buy printers once you feel you have the demand (a consistent flow of customers- meaning don’t buy it just because it’s cool- buy it because you are already having ppl beg for prints) and make sure you have the time (to be able to learn about the printers, work on them, occasionally fix them, cuss them out weekly, breakup and makeup with them 😂). PROs: Outside of the obvious pro of you being able to make money quicker without waiting to get paid from a 3rd party print on demand service you can print art anytime you want, be able to offer unbeatable prices since you have cut out the middle man, and have your own eyes on site to maintain the quality of the prints. Of course printing your own art allows flexibility on your type of print sales you want to have and it’s fast turn around on customer exchanges. I usually only print as the orders come in- rather than having inventory considering I offer 5 different print sizes and over 300 different paintings it can be difficult to store so much variety of prints pre-printed. CONS: When they breakdown THEN YOU HAVE A BREAK DOWN 😂! Oh and don’t let your printer stop working in the middle of fulfilling hundreds of orders 🥹! The cost of repairs ranges from $400-$1000 depending!! Usually 99% of the repairs you can’t do yourself so fixing them isn’t an option. Most print shops only will come to a commercial space to fix the printer and not a residential so I have to drive 2 hours to a printer repair shop in Raleigh that lets me drop them off for repair, since nobody in Charlotte will. This is why having 7 printers helps if one is sick.
