If you want a ranunculus blooming the spring, February is your starting window for zone five. If you’re in zone three and four wait 7 to 10 more days to pre-sprout them. You only need a few simple supplies to start them indoors – but temperature and moisture matter more than people realize. This is my 2nd year growing ranunculus in zone 7a 🌸 ✨This is what I did✨ Step 1. soak your dry ranunculus corms for 3-4 hours, til they are plumped up. Step 2. While those are soaking prepare where you are going to put your corms. The dirt needs to be moist. I just used what I had.. some crates with cardboard to hold in the dirt. Nothing fancy. I used a garden mix of soil from @loweshomeimprovement Step 3. Once your ranunculus corms are ready line your trays with the corms roots pointing down. Step 4. Cover the corms with dirt. Doesn’t need to be too thick. Step 5. After you have your ranunculus corms covered with soil, make sure that the soil is moist. The idea is keep the soil moist but not too wet. You don’t want the corms to get soggy or they will rot. If the soil gets dry mist the soil. Step 6. Place in a cool dark area. Ideally around 50–55°F. I use our mudroom. Check daily. Once they are sprouted I will harden them off to be planted outside. They thrive in cool weather. 57–64°F (day), 40–50°F (night). Plants go dormant above 80°F and will die below 26ºF. Ranunculus might be the most beautiful spring flower… and also one of the most frustrating to grow in Zone 3. They’re cool-loving, extremely particular, and if you miss the environmental window even slightly, they stall, sulk, or just go dormant without blooming. Ask me how I know — I’ve failed with them more than once. But after a lot of research (and a few humbling seasons), I think I’ve figured out a way to control their conditions enough to actually make them work here. If this plan succeeds, I might finally get the soft, layered, romantic spring planter moment I can’t achieve with overwintered tulips in pots. High risk. High reward. It’s ranunculus time again!!! I had a little fun making this reel. Hope you enjoy my sense of humor 🐙🤣 I’ll leave these in the garage for about 2 weeks to grow roots and sprout. Here is a tutorial on growing ranunculus. Drop any additional questions you have below 👇🏼 Farm plastic supply is a fantastic resource to get affordable greenhouse plastic in small quantities for those growing in small spaces. And they ship the same day! I stick rebar in the ground in the fall and we put 1/2" PVC tubing and the plastic up around 2/1. These materials cost us $30-$50 and have lasted us 4 years and are still going strong. They're not the fanciest low tunnels around, but they get the job done! For zone 5a, I think the ideal time to start ranunculus is 2/15 and planting in the ground 3/1
