Alleluia - it’s Semana Santa - holy week for the Catholics Here’s a new film I made last year in Sevilla, over a few strange days trying to capture the essence of something deeply old. Am very happy with it, you can watch it on YouTube through the link in bio. And here are a few words about it: « We’d been told: if it rained, the icons would stay inside. No processions. The skies needed to be clear over Seville. Jesús was my guide — a gentle musician, a friend, someone who knew the world of the hermandades with a kind of quiet detachment, as if he’d grown up near it, not within it. We thought we’d drift through the week lightly, but things took a different turn. A brief illness kept me indoors, and the rain followed. In the streets, people turned their faces away when a brotherhood, at the last minute, chose not to open its doors. Their Marys, their Jesuses, their heavy pasos — swaying sculptures carried by unseen shoulders — stayed in the shadows. Day after grey day, we gathered what we could. A few quiet prayers. A few crosses. A few talismans. Not much. A modest attempt to touch the sacred. And then — I think it was the last day — the sky lifted suddenly above the church of the Hermandad de la Trinidad. The voice of the capataz came first, calling out to guide a weighty, sightless structure into motion. The paso began to sway, and with it, my camera. Behind me, the band rose. The procession unfolded — deliberate, immense. And for a while, we were all carried by it. Crossed hands, shadowed faces, slow steps drawn into the Sevillian night. This is how the film begins. A quiet trace of another time, briefly opened.
