We added this art project to our @projectbasedprimary space unit! We took an in-depth look at our solar system, researching, creating, and making a fact sheet for each planet. Planning like a Reggio-inspired teacher doesn’t start with a rigid lesson plan. it starts with observation. 👀 Instead of deciding exactly what children will do, we watch, listen, and notice what they are curious about. Then we thoughtfully prepare the environment, add materials, and create provocations that invite deeper thinking. Planning becomes a cycle: Observe → Reflect → Prepare → Document → Extend learning. This means the curriculum isn’t something we force onto children. We build with them! When children show interest in shadows, we explore light. When they notice sticks outside, we bring them inside to build, design, and create. The teacher’s role isn’t to control learning. Here’s a little story about how I ended up running a micro school out of my living room… I was teaching in a public school, in my dream grade (kindergarten), that was centered around Project Based Learning. I had the best teaching partner, excellent coworkers, admin that were just doing their best, but outside the walls of my school there was no support. I was being physically assaulted daily by a student, my class was being trashed, other students were being hurt. No matter what my admin or I did we were met with “have you tried a sticker chart”? We were beyond sticker charts. I was stressed, physically ill, my chronic illnesses were getting worse, I cried at lunch almost daily, I was a crappy wife and mom when I got home because I just hand nothing left. My husband finally said to me “you can’t keep doing this”. I knew I had to resign. So I did. I was not sure what was coming next but I knew it wasn’t going to be another year like that. Then my husband was laid off unexpectedly the next day. Insert panic. I immediately kicked into gear. We started brainstorming, I knew I was going to be home with my 3 year old the next school year anyway and I thought, why don’t I just ask some friends and community members if they want me to teach their kids too? And it turns out they did! And when I shared that news here it turned out a lot of people wanted to know what I was teaching each week. Enter memberships. I figured, I’m writing this scope and sequence anyway, I’m making all these resources, why not invite others to use these materials too in their own homes, programs, and classrooms. And so Project Based Primary™️ was born! Since that moment this space has grown tremendously. When I resigned 2 years ago I never thought that I’d be running a school, hunting for a building to expand, running 4 memberships, writing a full phonics course, creating a writing curriculum, producing 20+ printables a month, holy cow! When I write it all out I am 😳 I am so grateful to have essentially panic created a business out of sheer necessity. And grateful for all of you that have supported this small, women-owned business.
