Projective Identification, like any defense, helps us get ri

Projective Identification, like any defense, helps us get rid of emotions that make us uncomfortable. But at a great cost. More info and recap for non-English speakers or those that learn best through reading: So, what is Projective Identification? First, there is a projection where someone, say Sara, attributes something they feel or think that they can not tolerate within themselves, to someone else, say Josh. Let's say that something is anger. Sara can't handle her anger and her guilt about her anger. It makes her so anxious that she has to project it onto Josh. In Sara's eyes, Josh is the angry one, not Sara. That is the initial projection. But then there's another step in Projective Identification. Sara then behaves in a way that creates anger in Josh. Maybe she becomes critical of him, cuts him off, and ignores him. Suddenly, Josh actually IS angry, and Sara can now see it in Josh. Sara's anger is not simply projected onto Josh in Sara's mind, but it is now actually IN Josh. Sara can try to control Josh through inducing the very feeling she wants in Josh so it doesn't land in her. Sara has no idea this is happening. It is a completely unconscious process. This process can create a lot of problems within a relationship and leave one person, in most cases, the one in Josh's role, feeling "crazy." Important note: There are many other processes that can look like Projective Identification but are NOT. A note to therapists: If this happens in a therapy session with a therapist who can notice their shifting role in a dynamic and their countertransference (and a therapist who has done enough of their own therapy to understand their countertransference), Projective Identification is helpful as it helps illuminate unconscious feelings and dynamics that the client might not be able to consciously communicate. #projectiveidentification #defensemechanism #defensemechanisms #mentalhealtheducation #relationshipproblem #relationshiphelp #relationshipproblems #breakingfree #psychodynamics #countertransference #psychoanalysis #istdp_therapist #istdp #psychodynamicpsychotherapy #relationshiphelp #parentchildrelationships #parentchildrelationship

“Projective identification involves both internal relational phantasies of self and object as well as external interactions with the environment. Both elements shape the transference. Continuous projections distort the ego’s image of the object, causing introjections that bring increased guilt, anxiety, and envy onto the ego, creating even more radical projections. Consequently, the countertransference is repeatedly stimulated in an evolving or devolving manner (Clarkin, Yeomans, Kernberg, 2006).” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19189810/ *all of my published sequences are available on my YouTube at the link in my bio!🩷

What happens when a client unconsciously puts their unprocessed childhood pain into their therapist? This is projective identification, a powerful psychodynamic process rooted in early emotional neglect. In this video, Ruth Cohn explains how neglected feelings from childhood can be projected into the therapeutic relationship, especially when those feelings were never named, validated, or metabolized in early life. #ProjectiveIdentification #ChildhoodNeglect #AttachmentTrauma #TherapistTools #PsychodynamicTherapy #RelationalTherapy #MentalHealthEducation #TherapistYouTube #RuthCohn #ClinicalTraining

Sometimes the people who frustrate us the most are the ones holding up a mirror. Psychologists call this projective identification, when the traits we criticize in others often reveal something unresolved within ourselves. That moment of irritation isn’t random. It can point to fears, insecurities, or even parts of us we’ve disowned. A controlling friend might be reflecting your own fear of letting go. A loud coworker might tap into the part of you that secretly wishes you could speak up more. It’s not easy to see frustration as an invitation, but that’s where self-awareness and personal growth begin. Instead of asking “Why are they like this?” try asking “Why does this bother me so much?” That question can change how you see relationships, triggers, and even yourself. Annoyance can either close you off or open a door to healing. The choice is yours. #InnerPeaceJourney #InnerPeaceJourneyco #SelfAwareness #PersonalGrowth #Mindfulness #PsychologyTips #EmotionalHealing

🪞How do we invisibly transfer our emotions to others, and what magic lies in revealing this unseen dance? Projective identification is like unconsciously tossing our feelings into someone else, a behavior first noticed in babies with their moms. It's an invisible way we influence others based on our buried issues, avoiding dealing with our tough emotions by making others express them for us. Facing up to this pattern can help us understand ourselves better and grow. Often, this cycle kicks off with blaming others, triggering a domino effect that reveals deeper, hidden struggles within us. How to Stop Feeling Let Down by Yourself and Others…

How to Stop Feeling Let Down by Yourself and Others… One of the biggest sources of disappointment in life comes from unmet expectations—both of ourselves and others. But what if the issue isn’t them or you, but the way we perceive reality? The Power of Quantum Thinking; In psychology and neuroscience, our perception is shaped by cognitive biases, past experiences, and emotional conditioning. When we assume others should behave a certain way based on our standards, we set ourselves up for frustration. Instead, adopting Quantum Thinking—the ability to see multiple perspectives at once—can radically transform the way we experience life. Why We Get Let Down • Cognitive Dissonance: When reality doesn’t align with our internal expectations, we feel discomfort. • Projective Identification: We unconsciously expect others to reflect our own values, responses, or effort. • Negativity Bias: Our brains are wired to focus on what goes wrong rather than what goes right. How to Shift Your Perspective 1️⃣ Detach from Personal Bias: Understand that others act based on their lived experiences, not yours. 2️⃣ Reframe Expectations: Rather than expecting people to meet your standards, see them for who they are. 3️⃣ Practice Radical Acceptance: Accept situations and people as they are, without resistance. 4️⃣ Develop Emotional Agility: Recognize and regulate your emotional responses rather than reacting impulsively. 5️⃣ Ask, ‘What Else Could Be True?’ Before assuming someone let you down, consider alternative explanations. The Outcome? Less frustration, fewer emotional triggers, and greater inner peace. Quantum Thinking isn’t about lowering your standards—it’s about elevating your perspective. Take away; “Most of our disappointments come from expecting ourselves in other people. Shift the way you think, and you’ll shift the way you feel. #QuantumThinking #PerspectiveShift #EmotionalIntelligence”

When your toddler has a meltdown and you suddenly feel overw
13,554

When your toddler has a meltdown and you suddenly feel overwhelmed, irritated, or helpless, it is easy to assume you are failing. But what if that feeling is actually part of the communication? Infants and toddlers do not fully understand their emotions yet. They also do not have language strong enough to explain what is happening inside them. So instead, they communicate by making you feel how they feel. In psychoanalysis, this process is called projective identification. When your child feels flooded, you may start to feel flooded. When they feel chaotic, you may feel chaotic. That internal shift is not random. It is an early, primitive way of sharing distress. Your job is not to eliminate the feeling. Your job is to transform it. You feel the overwhelm, but you do not become overwhelmed. You feel the chaos, but you remain steady enough to think. Over time, the way you regulate your emotions becomes the template for how your child learns to relate to their own. So next time you feel overwhelmed, instead of thinking you are failing, consider that your child may be asking to borrow your nervous system. #goodenoughpsychiatrist #childdevelopment #mentalhealth #parenting
