Finger Proprioception Meets Full-Body Calm This looks like a silly kitchen party trick. But neurologically it’s a legit coordination drill. If you can keep a wobbly spatula upright on one finger you’re training the same systems we use for balance, fine motor control and movement confidence. 1️⃣ Finger–Brain Connection Balancing an object on one finger turns your hand into a live sensor. Your fingertip mechanoreceptors, wrist stabilisers and shoulder muscles are constantly feeding the brain micro-updates so you can make tiny corrections fast. That “constant recalibration” is proprioception in real time. 2️⃣ Cerebellum = Precision & Timing Clinically we use coordination tasks (like finger tests) to see how well the cerebellum is sequencing movement. This drill is basically a friendly version of that. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s practice. Little errors. Little corrections. That’s how motor learning sticks. 3️⃣ Whole-Body Balance Without Thinking About Balance Even though the spatula is “hand work”, your pelvis and foot tripod are doing quiet auto-calibrations underneath you so the hand can stay accurate. If you want to level it up safely, take a few slow steps around the room. If you want to level it up more, try a wider spatula first. Shorter objects are harder. 4️⃣ Fear of Movement (Kinesiophobia) For people who’ve become cautious after pain or injury, safe playful tasks are gold. You’re not “stretching” anything. You’re rebuilding trust. Graded exposure works when the movement is controlled, repeatable and non-threatening. This is exactly that. 5️⃣ NRE This is Neural Re-Education in the simplest form. I had this idea this morning. What if we did one movement snack a day just for proprioception? Nothing intense. Nothing flashy. Just small, repeatable inputs your nervous system can actually use. Day 1: Tandem stance. One foot directly in front of the other. Soft knees. Tripod foot. Slow breath. It looks simple. It’s not. This is ankle strategy. Hip stability. Ribcage awareness. Your system learning where you are in space. If you’re hypermobile, you probably don’t need more stretch. You need clearer input. Try 30 to 60 seconds per side. Stand near a wall or counter. Good proprioception = better awareness of where your body is in space 🧠🤸♂️ In this video you’ll see some mid-advanced ankle proprioception exercises movements designed to challenge and improve the connection between your nervous system and your ankle muscles. What is proprioception? Proprioception is your body’s ability to sense movement, position, and balance without looking. It comes from receptors in muscles, tendons, and joints and helps you adapt to changing surfaces, react to situations, and land safely during movement. Why does it matter for the ankle? Poor ankle proprioception is strongly linked to ongoing instability and recurrent sprains after injury. Research shows that after an ankle injury, proprioceptive feedback can be impaired, which increases the risk of future injury and reduces functional performance (Han et al., 2015; Hiller et al., 2011).
