Serious question for the defenders of capitalism: how do you account for such vast accumulation of wealth at the very top that a handful of multi-billionaires are able to spend virtually unlimited money influencing elections and propping up politicians that undercut both democracy itself and the free market principles capitalism is supposed to stand for? Today there are roughly 195 countries in the world. Around 20 to 25 are considered “developed.” The rest more than 160 countries is called the developing or underdeveloped world. Almost all of them are capitalist. The 5 countries that are labeled socialist (China, Vietnam, Cuba, North Korea ) exist in a global capitalist system and extend its production relations into capitalists ones . The world operating under capitalism means the production forces are controlled by private forces with heavy lobbying power inside the State. So when liberals say “capitalism gives you freedom,” we need to ask: freedom for whom? The concept of freedom that was structured in Europe and later reshaped by the United States is an abstraction. It is the idea that “I can criticize the government,” “I can post what I want,” “I can vote.” But this was never a universal reality. It was a partial reality of hegemonic countries. Western hegemony allowed a certain margin of freedom because the productive base was strong enough, and the ideology was already embedded in mass consumption, in cinema, in media, in advertising, in social networks. The criticism allowed was rarely radical. It was moral, ethical, social but it did not threaten the structure. It did not threaten the ownership of the means of production. But as Western hegemony weakens,economically and geopolitically, you start to see censorship, repression, and emergency measures becoming more visible. Suddenly, the same countries that used to accuse others of authoritarianism begin to use similar tools. People say, “This is fascism returning.” Yes, that can be part of it. But more fundamentally, this is not an anomaly. It is part of capitalism itself when its crises of reproduction intensify. And here is the most important point: this so-called “freedom” was never the reality for most of the capitalist world. In large parts of the Global South, capitalism never meant freedom of speech, freedom of prosperity, or freedom of stability. It meant the freedom to be poor, the freedom to sleep on the street, the freedom to be unemployed. Massive unemployment rates are normal in capitalist economies. Continue in the comments \/
