Incredible (ans rare) proton aurora, brighter than a full moon, pulses across the energy-laden night sky, brightening up the whole landscape for a few seconds at the time. This phenomenon is actually quite interesting, with a different origin story than your usual green auroras. These bright patches of intense green form because of dislodged protons, that get flung out of earth‘s proton ring (a ring-like structure around the planet in space) by strong geomagnetic storming. Like the electrons from the solar wind currents, these protons then collide with atoms in the upper atmosphere and excite them into emitting some light. Basically a very similar process than your regular aurora, but with particles that are quite literally the opposite of each other.
