I love seeing ocean aliens! This is salp. Salp is a marine invertebrate that moves by contracting & pumping water through its gelatinous body. It feeds on plankton through its internal feeding filters. When the plankton is plentiful, the salp can clog & sink to the sea floor. This sinking salp carries carbon & nutriets to the sea floor. Small fish can also use salp as a home, protection, or food. Salp do not have a brain or central nervous system. Each plant is a tiny green oval body, typically less than 1 millimeter in size, without roots or true leaves. Despite its minute size, Wolffia globosa reproduces rapidly by budding, allowing it to form dense mats on water surfaces. It has a high protein content (up to 40% dry weight), making it a potential sustainable food source for humans and livestock. Recent research also explores its use in wastewater treatment and as a biofuel feedstock, showcasing its ecological and economic importance.

Porpita porpita, or commonly called the blue button jellyfish, is quite a cool critter! It is an animal consisting of a colony of hydroids! What this means is, that each blue button jellyfish you see, like the one pictured, is actually a colony of individual hydrozoan polyps, so it’s not a single animal but a colony of them! They can grow up to 3cm/1in wide and are preyed upon by the beautiful blue dragon nudibranch, Glaucus atlanticus! Their blooms can be seen from space 🛰️! Coccolithophores are a type of single-celled algae (phytoplankton) covered in calcium carbonate plates called coccoliths. They can create massive blooms that turn ocean waters a beautiful turquoise or milky blue because of their reflective plates reflecting and scattering sunlight - imagine a tiny ball of mirrors! Blooms occur when conditions-like sunlight, nutrients, and temperature-are ideal, often in nutrient-rich upwelling zones. Coccolithophores play a key role in the marine biological pump and carbon cycle. They absorb carbon dioxide, and when they die, their coccoliths sink to the ocean floor, sequestering carbon. I had the opportunity to experience this bloom when visiting Port Alice, BC in @vancouverislandnorth, where the ocean waters are cold and nutrient rich!
