In the 6-12 months leading up to her first cycle, you may notice: •Breast development •A growth spurt •Body odor •Acne •Mood changes or increased emotional sensitivity •Clear or white vaginal discharge (this is normal) This is your window as mom not to panic, but to start the conversation with your daughter. Talking early helps your daughter, even as uncomfortable as it can be. Trust me I know How uncomfortable this 😳. Talking early will help your daughter: • Feel prepared instead of scared • Understand that her changing body is healthy • Learn how to care for her cycle with confidence As a nurse practitioner in family practice, I always tell moms: The goal isn’t a “perfect talk.” It’s an open door so she knows she can come to you. CONSTANTLY CRITIQUING HER APPEARANCE Even if it’s said with love or “just being helpful”… comments about her weight, skin, posture, hair, clothing, or how she looks compared to others stacks up in her heart. Teens are already incredibly self conscious. She needs her mom to be a safe place, not a critic. Try this instead: Notice and compliment her smile, laugh, creativity, energy, strength, and kindness. 2. CALLING HER DRAMATIC Teens already fear that their feelings are too much so when we say things like, “you’re being dramatic… you’re so sensitive”… it can make her feel small, misunderstood, and like what’s going on for her isn’t safe to share with you. Try this instead: “I can tell this feels so hard for you.” “I’m here for you even if I don’t totally understand.” “I love you and I’m here to help.” You don’t have to agree with her, but this shows her that her emotions matter. 3. MAKING EVERY CONVERSATION A TEACHING MOMENT Unfortunately, this one is my specialty 🙃 It’s easy to fall into this because we love them and want to protect them. But when everything turns into advice or a correction, your daughter can begin to feel like she’s a project instead of a person. She’ll pull away… not because she doesn’t love you, but because she doesn’t feel heard. Try this instead: Resist the urge to teach in the moment. Just listen. Often, the more she feels heard, the more she’ll invite your wisdom. ❤️ 4. NOT APOLOGIZING WHEN YOU’RE WRONG You lost your temper. You misunderstood. You said something that came out wrong. If you never circle back, she learns that love doesn’t include accountability. Try this instead: Model humility and repair. Make things right. Apologizing doesn’t make you weak. It makes you safe.
