If you are looking to get your first pull up but struggling on what to do to get there, practice the exercises explained in this reel. 1. Hanging from bar: it’s important to practice an ‘active’ hang compared to a ‘dead hang’. This just means to make sure your lats and other muscles are engaged in this hang. This is the start of every pull up. You will need the strength to hold yourself on the bar for an extended time. Try to hold yourself for 30 seconds then rest. Increase the time as you’re able. 2. Scapula Pulls: an underrated exercise but super important. At first this can be a strange workout until you can build that mind-muscle connection. This movement will help you develop the strength and control you will need for correct form. 3. Banded Pull-ups: there are a few ways to use the band to help you actually complete the whole pull up movement (as seen in the video). The reason I like these is because it is very comparable to a real pull up but the band will help offset some of your body weight. There are many different bands that correspond to different weights so find one that you’re able to do 5-8 pull ups for a few sets. 4. Negatives: MY FAVORITE!! This is where so much of the magic will happen for you to get your first pull up. as you slowly lower yourself down in this movement, you will be building all the muscles you need to pull yourself up. In the past, I would work on my negatives 2-3 times a week for 14 minutes. At the start of the minute I would do 1 negative. Then I would rest until the next minute started and then do another one. I would end up doing a total of 14 negatives. The goal is to truly go as slow as you can on the way down, especially on the last quarter of it (this is where people tend to drop). Some of other good exercises to do would be some type of row or lat pull down. Add these exercises into your routine and you WILL be able to do a pull up. It takes time and patience, but they will come!!
