This is a common problem for all pump jacks I’ve used. They will last years and years but will eventually slip like this. It’s not a safety concern, but rather very annoying. You can use the other foot to kick the brake lever back every time. That gets old very quickly - trust me. Springs are very difficult to source and I’ve even taken springs off other pump jacks to try to solve the problem, but I’ve found this to be the quickest and easiest solution that will last for a few years before the bungee has to be replaced. If you’ve experienced this with your pump jacks, I hope this video solves your problem. I’m open to hearing other solutions you’ve had to this known “old pump jack brake lever problem”. Oil well pumps, often called pump jacks or “nodding donkeys,” are iconic symbols of oil extraction. These mechanical systems are designed to extract crude oil from underground reservoirs where natural pressure is too low to push the oil to the surface. The pump works using a counterweight and a motor-driven mechanism that moves a sucker rod up and down. This motion creates suction in the well, pulling the oil to the surface. This method, called artificial lift, is critical in oil fields where natural flow isn’t sufficient. While these pumps may look simple, they’re vital to the global energy industry. In regions with fewer regulations, maintenance and worker safety can sometimes be overlooked, highlighting the challenges of balancing efficiency and ethical practices in oil production.

These are called ladder jacks. They are available at most hardware stores that sell ladders here. I’ve had many questions asking what these are. In my region you’re still allowed to use them if you set up guardrails or are tied off. I was working on my own house in this video so there are no governing safety regulations for working in your own home. They are definitely VERY handy for small jobs like this where setting up pump jacks aren’t really worth it and where you can’t access the location via a man lift. With anything, there are risks - including climbing a tree in your own yard. Years ago, this was the only way people worked, without harnesses, now job sites are governed differently in different regions to protect the workers 👍 They are quite stable especially since both my @littlegiantladders have outrigger legs to make sure the ladder can be set up plumb on uneven ground. Onshore crude oil extraction begins with the identification of oil-rich locations using geological surveys, seismic data, and other exploration methods. Once a potential site is found, a drilling rig is set up to drill a well into the earth to reach the oil reservoir. Drilling fluid, or “mud,” is used to cool the drill bit, bring rock cuttings to the surface, and maintain well pressure. Once the oil reservoir is reached, casing pipes are inserted and cemented in place to stabilize the well and prevent contamination of groundwater. The oil is then brought to the surface using pumps, often employing artificial lift systems like pump jacks when natural pressure is insufficient. The extracted crude oil is transported to storage facilities and eventually sent to refineries for further processing.
