The books & resources that taught me quantum physics ⚛️ So many of you showed interest in this collection of books and material. The material is suitable for graduate level physics, or someone with an already existing ground knowledge in fundamental physics; mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, etc. and maths: differential equations, linear algebra, etc. If you are a complete beginner, I would advise you to at least spend some time on the fundamentals before starting. Here I recommend the Feynman lectures, YouTube courses, the book “University Physics with Modern Physics” by Young & Freedman. Now onto the collection: 📖 David J. Griffiths, Introduction to Quantum Mechanics: A good introductory book to QM, following a chronological order. Gets pretty involved quickly, but enables a good evolution in complexity from simple to complex systems. 📽️ YouTube course: Quantum Physics I by MIT: For anyone wanting to brush up on certain topics and who likes to watch lectures, this is for you. 📖 Sakurai & Napolitano, Modern Quantum Mechanics: Some would argue that this is the best QM book out there. It is very rigid, get straight to the point and is a good book to look-up concepts, because it’s so concise. 📖 Nielsen & Chuang, Quantum Computation and Quantum Information: This book I’m using to get acquainted with quantum computing, as it covers a large range of topics necessary to understand quantum computers; entanglement, algorithms, errors, fidelity, etc. 📖 Ballentine, Quantum Mechanics - A Modern Development: This book covers many theoretical, foundational concepts in quantum (symmetries, identical particles, angular momentum, time-dependent phenomena) and is very consise as well. The math can get hairy, but most chapters in the book are informative, get straight to the point. What’s the difference between Quantum and Classical mechanics? It is going to be a list and intersections between both. Moreover an atom can be in some cases be described by classical (Newton’s laws) or quantum mechanics (Schrödinger equation, Density matrix formalism). About these things we will talk in further videos. For now let’s start with the notion of trajectory. The main difference is that in classical mechanics you can have certain initial coordinates and velocities. In quantum mechanics you don’t possess such luxury. So you have to choose which set of physical quantities you will use as complete. Due to this fact, due to the uncertainty principle, you can not define a trajectory for a particle when it obeys the laws of quantum mechanics. I find it important to mention here that the transition from quantum to classical and back can be defined by various parameters. I personally like to start with the ones we use in theoretical physics: classical S action and quantum action \hbar.
