DON’T YELL AT ME…. That quilt was one my mom made and never finished years ago. She asked me if I wanted to take it and finish it because she never liked what she did with the fabric. So I took it and it sat in my sewing stuff for a while. Until I realized, it would make a beautiful quilted jacket. And while my mother is TERRIBLY difficult to shop for… she had picked out this fabric herself! And I know she loves a good cozy layering piece. So I got to work and brought it to life. I bought a pattern for this because I was scared to be cutting into a quilt, but I ended it ditching it for most of the project and hating using it. YEARS. and i get it, the coat is iconic, it's my signature piece, it's the thing that made people notice me. but that pattern? it's not happening. not right now. it's more complicated than i'm comfortable teaching right now. i needed to start with something easy. so i'm giving you the VIVIEN VEST instead. a completely different garment. a quick make that's beginner friendly. different technique. different vibe. not a "preview" of the coat, not a "stepping stone" - just a really good quilted vest that sold well when i used to make and sell them in 2021. i wrote it for quilters who want to try garment making without all the fancy terminology. sizes range from 3 months to XXL, so you can make matching vests for the entire household if that's the kind of chaos you're into. is this what you asked for? no. is it what i'm willing to give you right now? yes. take it or leave it. the VIVIEN VEST pattern is live now. link in bio.

PART ONE of turning a sweatshirt into a quilted jacket!!! Let’s start with the strips! This is where you can be really creative. You can use a jelly roll, scraps, or make a patchwork look like I did. Here is what I did: *Start with at least 12 fat quarters *Out of each fat quarter I cut one 4, 5, and 6 inch strip with about a 3 inch scrap (the 22inch length). *divide each with into piles, including 3 inch scrap. *Randomly pick a strip from each pile and sew together until you have used one of each width and made a new fat quarter. *Now cut across each new fat quarter to make patchwork strips. I cut 5 2inch and 4 2 1/2 inch strips from each fat quarter. *I then take 2 strips of the same width and sew them together to make a longer strip at least 26 inches long. *You will need at least 55-60 strips to cover a large sweatshirt. Now let’s cut apart the sweatshirt! *Start by turning the sweatshirt inside out and put a pin in the front to keep track of the front. *Cut off the cuffs, bottom and collar. This is why you will want to buy a sweatshirt at least one size bigger. *Then cut the seams of the sides, sleeves and shoulders. *Take the front piece and fold it in half and cut up the center of the front to have two pieces.
