Most bunnies are not destructive or distant, they are actually under-stimulated. Enrichment isn’t just toys like many people believe (I used to think that too!). 5 Simple Ways to Improve Your Rabbit’s Quality of Life 🐰 These are five key areas that play an important role in a rabbit’s quality of life: 1. Space Rabbits need space, and lots of it. They love to run, jump, zoom around and binky, which is why the minimum recommended space for a pair of rabbits is 3m x 2m. Alongside space, they also need places to hide so they can feel safe and secure when they choose. 2. Diet A rabbit’s diet should be 85-90% quality hay or grass, which should be available at all times.
Plus a daily portion of fresh veggies and herbs, a small portion of high-quality nuggets, and fresh water (ideally in a bowl). 3. Companionship Rabbits are social animals and are much happier living in pairs or groups. Once rabbits are neutered, you can begin the bonding process. It can take time and patience, but it’s so worth it in the end as bonded rabbits look out for each other, snuggle up together and groom one another. 4. Enrichment Enrichment is essential for encouraging natural behaviours such as digging, foraging and exploring. Providing daily mental stimulation helps prevent boredom and supports overall wellbeing. 5. Health Checks & Vaccinations Keeping on top of regular health checks and routine vaccinations is an important part of responsible rabbit care. Monitoring weight, teeth, nails and behaviour, alongside regular vet check-ups and vaccinations, helps catch potential issues early and supports long-term health. While Binkies and Zoomies are often seen as signs of joy, I don’t encourage them—especially not as goals in training. They’re not what most people think they are. In rabbits, these behaviors show a spike in arousal, not regulation. And in prey animals, arousal is rarely cleanly “happy” or “playful.” It’s often a nervous system firing off—sometimes from excitement, yes, but just as often from stress, overstimulation, or a desperate release after being confined or handled too much. People like to project celebration onto these moments, but what they’re really seeing is a rabbit offloading nervous system tension. It’s not grounded. It’s not safe. It’s not regulated. At the end of this video, I include a clip where this same bunny—same day, same time—is visibly recoiling from my touch. This isn’t a happy, joyous occasion for this bunny. It’s a physical sign of dysregulation and fear. He’s been restrained multiple times that day, is in a new environment, and has had no time to decompress. This isn’t trust—it’s trauma. What people interpret as “happy Zoomies” or “silly Binkies” are often dysregulated discharges—like a kid so overstimulated on Christmas morning they rip everything open and melt down five minutes later. It looks like joy, but the nervous system is in chaos. Regulation doesn’t look like chaos. It looks like choice. And rabbits rarely choose those behaviors unless they’re escaping something or reacting to stress. Rabbits are prey animals with nervous systems that mirror complex trauma responses: exaggerated startle reflexes, disordered attachment, hypervigilance, and rapid shifts between freeze and flight. That’s why I train differently. I offer them peace—schedules, consistency, gentle repetition, and safety. I don’t reward their panic. I don’t confuse reactivity with readiness. I wait until their body is calm, their breathing is slow, their posture is soft—and then I meet them. Because I don’t want a bunny that performs. I want a bunny that feels safe enough to choose connection.
