A future where Radiated Tortoises thrive in the wild starts here. 🐢 In Madagascar, Radiated Tortoises (Astrochelys radiata) are heavily targeted for the illegal pet trade. Their striking shells have made them highly desirable to poachers, and combined with habitat loss, this pressure has pushed the species to Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. At our two Madagascar facilities—the Tortoise Conservation Center and the Lavavolo Tortoise Center—we care for more than 20,000 Radiated Tortoises rescued from the illegal trade and now awaiting release into community-protected areas. Working alongside local communities and biologists, we developed our Confiscation to Reintroduction plan to return these tortoises to the wild. Each year, thousands are released into protected habitat with local community support, while we continue caring for those not yet ready for release. Flayer a younger radiated tortoise discovered the new hide and has been using it consistently throughout the day and night. Some advantages of this shed is that even with the doors closed I can get a sneak peak in and check on them with the sliding roof option. This allows for temperature regulation as well as letting some sunlight on days where it’s too cold to let them out. A fun way to repurpose an old shed being thrown out.

Radiated tortoises have blood vessels and nerves in their cells, which means they can feel and enjoy tactile enrichment, or scratchies 🥰🐢 The keepers share that the tortoises are very engaging animals. They follow their keepers, walk in circles around them, and have even crawled into their laps. An update from myself. Not the one I wanted to give, but that's life. I continue on with determination. I have a large mass obstructing my bronchii on my latest (feb 15th scan) the mass was considered inflammation/ scar tissue as it's mostly in a pre radiated area. But this scan was different. In a twist, all of the stuff we are dealing with, was unchanged, considering I'm not actually on treatment, that's amazing. I'm waiting to see if I can get on a trial, I'm really hoping for that to open up. But we don't know if it will even do anything. But me, the man dealing with this for 4 years, Thomas Woodcock, still believes I can get through this. I know that I may not have long left, that's very possible now but that does not stop me from believing that my day is coming. That I'm going to get my break and I'm going to take it. No matter what happens, I face it with dignity and courage. Head on. I always have and I always will. 💚
