This Radiohead Hit Was Never Meant to Be “Creep” – Radiohead (1993, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, New York City) “Creep” wasn’t intended to define Radiohead—or even be released. Written years before their debut album, it only made it onto Pablo Honey after producers pushed for something looser during the sessions. Thom Yorke offered the song half-reluctantly. Jonny Greenwood’s now-famous distorted guitar blasts were meant to disrupt the take, not shape it. But what was supposed to be a throwaway ended up catching a nerve—first in the U.S., then globally. The BBC rejected it as “too depressing.” The band didn’t expect it to land at all. Yet “Creep” became their breakout single, introducing them to a wide audience and locking them into a narrative they’d spend years trying to undo. This Conan performance captures the awkward moment when that accidental success was still unfolding—before the backlash, before the reinvention, and before the band took back control of their direction. — #CoverOfTheWeek #Radiohead #Creep #PabloHoney #ThomYorke #JonnyGreenwood #90sRock #AlternativeRock #LateNightTV #ConanObrien #MusicHistory #1993Performance #BritishRock #GrungeEra #LiveMusic

‏Radiohead is a British band formed in the mid-1980s that became one of the most influential groups in modern music. What makes Radiohead different is not only their sound, but their mindset. They constantly challenge expectations and refuse to stay in one musical category. In the beginning, Radiohead was known for alternative rock, but over time they moved toward experimental and electronic music. Albums like OK Computer explored themes of technology, alienation, and the loss of human connection. Later, Kid A surprised the world by rejecting traditional rock structures and embracing electronic, ambient, and abstract sounds. ‏Lyrically, Radiohead focuses on anxiety, identity, isolation, and emotional vulnerability. Their music reflects the pressure of modern life and the feeling of being disconnected in a fast, digital world. Instead of offering clear solutions, their songs invite listeners to sit with their emotions and reflect. ‏Radiohead’s influence goes beyond music. They changed how artists think about creativity, artistic freedom, and the relationship between musicians and the industry. By choosing experimentation over commercial safety, Radiohead proved that music can be challenging, uncomfortable, and still deeply meaningful. ‏In many ways, Radiohead is not just a band — it is an experience that grows with the listener over time.

"Creep" is the debut single by the English rock band Radiohead, released on 21 September 1992. It was included on Radiohead's debut album, Pablo Honey (1993). It features "blasts" of guitar noise by Jonny Greenwood and lyrics describing an obsessive unrequited attraction.Radiohead had not planned to release "Creep", and recorded it at the suggestion of the producers, Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie, while they were working on other songs. They took elements from the 1972 song "The Air That I Breathe" by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood. Following legal action, Hammond and Hazlewood were credited as co-writers. Kolderie convinced Radiohead's record label, EMI, to release "Creep" as a single. It was initially unsuccessful, but achieved radio play in Israel and became popular on American alternative rock radio. It was reissued in 1993 and became an international hit, likened to alt-rock "slacker anthems" such as ''Smells Like Teen Spirit'' by Nirvana and ''Loser" by Beck. Reviews of "Creep" were mostly positive. EMI pressured Radiohead to match the success, which created tension during the recording of their second album, The Bends (1995). Radiohead departed from the style of "Creep" and grew weary of it, feeling it set narrow expectations of their music, and did not perform it for several years. Though they achieved greater commercial and critical success with later albums, "Creep" remains Radiohead's best-selling single. It was named one of the greatest debut singles and one of the greatest songs by Rolling Stone. In 2021, the singer, Thom Yorke, released a remixed version with synthesisers and time-stretched acoustic guitar.Radiohead formed in Oxfordshire in 1985 and signed a record contract with EMI in 1991. Their 1992 debut, the Drill EP, drew little attention. For their debut single, Radiohead hired the producers Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie and recorded at Chipping Norton Recording Studios in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. They worked on the songs "Inside My Head" and "Lurgee", but without results.

It was produced by John Leckie , with additional production by Radiohead, Nigel Godrich and Jim Warren. The Bends combines guitar-driven songs and ballads, with more restrained arrangements and more cryptic lyrics than Radiohead's debut album, Pablo Honey (1993).

Thom on ‘Fake Plastic Trees’: “It was very much a breakthrough on the album. The day we recorded that song was a complete nightmare. I had a complete meltdown, so everyone left the studio. It was just me and my acoustic guitar, but there was something chilling hanging around in the air. We’d been there for a month, and that was the first time I felt any connection with what Radiohead’s about. The funny thing is it took bloody months to get everything else on top of it to sound natural. All the bizarre keyboard noises were done at Abbey Road using an old Hammond organ Paul McCartney used on ‘Magical Mystery Tour.’ We had it plugged into all the guitar amplifiers, every single effect, all the knobs and switches going. It was deafeningly loud, filling up the whole studio. That song could have easily sounded like Guns N’ Roses. We wanted it to sound like Phil Spector.” #radiohead #fakeplastictrees #thebends #thomyorke #jonnygreenwood #colingreenwood #edobrien #philipselway
