Every first Sunday of the month, visitors step into a classroom from 1890. The teacher is strict. The rules are strict. And the lessons are unforgettable. We practised the old alphabet, learned to count money quickly and even revised the countries of the British Empire. There was also a rather serious discussion about Victorian punishments — thankfully in a very light-hearted way. What made it special for me was seeing my daughter experience history rather than just read about it. History around every corner! This was the Charter Street Ragged School & Working Girls Home in Manchester. I’ve walked by it dozens of times and decided to finally look into its history. It’s in the district of Angel Meadow (just around the corner from Victoria Station). If you’ve ridden the tram up to Bury, you’ve gone straight over it. In the industrial era, Angel Meadow was considered the worst slum in all of Britain. The Ragged School provided free education, food and clothing to impoverished children and the Working Girls Home provided accomodation and support for young girls working in the service industry in an attempt to keep them away from the negative influences of lodging houses.
