Dynamic Range What is Dynamic Range? • The difference between the darkest shadow and the brightest highlight that a camera can capture in a single shot • Measured in “stops” (more stops = better range) Why is it Important? • Helps you capture details in both bright and dark areas • Prevents blown-out highlights (too white) or crushed shadows (too black) • Critical for high-contrast scenes like: • Sunset • Backlit portraits • Indoors with bright windows Dynamic Range in Photography • RAW files retain more dynamic range than JPEGs • High DR = more flexibility in editing (exposure, shadows, highlights) • Cameras with better sensors (Full Frame or Medium Format) usually have higher dynamic range How is it Measured? • In stops of light (e.g., 12 stops, 14 stops) • Each stop = doubling of light • A human eye has ~20 stops (approx), top cameras = ~14–15 stops Pro Tips to Maximize Dynamic Range: • Shoot in RAW (for photos) or Log/Flat (for video) • Expose for highlights → recover shadows later • Use ND filters in video for high-contrast daylight scenes • Avoid overexposing skies or light sources
