Ray Charles is one of the most innovative and important musicians in the history of music. His experimentation with gospel and R&B has opened doors for so many artists and genres to emerge. Growing up poor in Greenville, Florida, Ray had glaucoma and went completely blind by the age of 7. He learned to play music at a school for the deaf and blind where became fluent in Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. Later on, he developed an interest in jazz, blues and country music which was where his passion grew. In 1952, he was signed by Atlantic Records which led him into stardom by the mid to late 50s. In the early 60s, Ray innovated music by blending the sounds of country, jazz and soul music. Along with his success came a crippling heroin addiction that nearly ended his life in the 60s. But, he was devoted to get clean and finally kicked the drug in 1966. His 1960 hit, Georgia on My Mind earned him 2 grammy awards. Ironically, Charles was banned from playing in Georgia for the rest of his life after he refused to play for a segregated audience in the state. In 1979, the state of Georgia welcomed back Ray Charles and made the song, Georgia on My Mind, their state anthem. Ray’s legacy is too great to sum up into just a few words on Instagram. Remembering the great Ray Charles who was born this week in 1930. Regarded as one of the most iconic and influential singers in history, and often referred to by contemporaries as “The Genius”, Charles was credited with the early development of soul music. Charles’s rhythmic piano playing and band arranging revived the “funky” quality of jazz, but he also recorded in many other musical genres. Charles emerged as a blues and jazz pianist indebted to Nat King Cole’s style in the late 1940s. Propelled by his distinctive raspy voice, “I’ve Got a Woman” and “Hallelujah I Love You So” became hit records. “What’d I Say” led the rhythm and blues sales charts in 1959 and was Charles’s own first million-seller. The recipient of many national and international awards, he received 13 Grammy Awards, including a lifetime achievement award in 1987. In 1986 Charles was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received a Kennedy Center Honor, and he was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1993. Ray Charles Robinson Sr. (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004) was an American singer, songwriter and pianist. He is regarded as one of the most iconic and influential musicians in history, and was often referred to by contemporaries as “The Genius”. Among friends and fellow musicians he preferred being called “Brother Ray”. Charles was blinded during childhood, possibly due to glaucoma. Charles pioneered the soul music genre during the 1950s by combining blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, and gospel styles into the music he recorded for Atlantic Records. He contributed to the integration of country music, rhythm and blues, and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, notably with his two Modern Sounds albums.
