Who can tell me why it looks like it’s glowing blue? > Spent Fuel pools are essential parts of each power plant. They are connected to the reactors through underwater tunnels, which are sealed off during operation. During normal operation, power plant bring in new fuel bundles and place them in the spent fuel pool. When an outage, or a refueling period, occurs, those underwater tunnels are then opened up. Technicians & operators then use some awesome tools (including one called an “up-ender”) to move spent nuclear fuel out of the core and into the spent fuel pool, while then also placing the new fuel bundles into the reactor core for the next operation cycle. Spent fuel pools can be connected to two reactors at one time. They are incredible tools for preparing for efficient outages, while also maintaining safe storage of spent nuclear fuel. Spent nuclear fuel remains in the pool for about 7-9 years before it is removed from the pool and placed into dry cask storage for continued safe storage. #Nuclear #Science #Power #SpentFuelPool #Electricity

We're going inside Australia's only multi-purpose nuclear reactor with Oksana, an ANSTO science graduate. ANSTO's reactor OPAL produces #nuclear medicine for the detection and #treatment of disease, and neutrons for scientific #research and irradiations for industry. As part of the graduate program, Oksana gains experience with different teams across site. For her first rotation, Oksana joined the team who produce #radioisotopes in the reactor. She now helps the #reactor operations team, who monitor all aspects of OPAL. Visit our early careers page to learn more.

UK nuclear fusion reactor sets new world record for energy output ⚡️💡 In its final experiments before being shut down for good last year, the UK's JET reactor set a world record for the energy output of a fusion reaction, reaching 69 megajoules of output. for 5.2 seconds. When running, it was temporarily the hottest point in the solar system, reaching 150 million°C. Tap link in bio to learn more #fusion, #JET, #nuclear, #reactor, #energy, #Torus #science

Def one of my favorite classes I’ve ever taken!!! Students operate this research reactor. > Cherenkov radiation is when a charged particle moves through a material faster than that specific materials speed of light. In normal human terms, it’s like if you were holding a bunch of loose papers and a car went speeding by you - the wind from the car may cause you to drop some of those papers! It’s the same case here. The charged particles from the pulse disrupt the molecules in the water to release photons, or light particles. I always wondered… how did the media end up with “glowing green goo” when the main stuff that glows in nuclear science glows blue 🤔 #Nuclear #Science #Energy #Reactor #Power

Pressing the AZ-5 button sealed the reactor’s fate due to a catastrophic design flaw in the control rods themselves. While the main body of the rods consisted of boron designed to absorb neutrons and safely kill the nuclear reaction, their tips were made of graphite, a material that actually accelerates the reaction. Because the operators had previously withdrawn almost all the rods completely out of the core, pressing AZ-5 meant these graphite tips entered first, simultaneously displacing cooling water that was also helping to absorb neutrons. For a few crucial seconds, this created a massive, localized power surge at the bottom of the core instead of the intended shutdown. The intense heat instantly vaporized the remaining cooling water into high-pressure steam and swelled the surrounding fuel channels, physically jamming the rods just one-third of the way down. The boron never reached the core to stop the reaction, causing the power level to multiply uncontrollably until the immense steam pressure blew the 1,000-ton biological shield right off the reactor. . #physicslord #physicsmeme #physicslove #physicswallah #nuclearphysics #nuclearpower #chernobyl #nuclearreactor #reactor

AZ-5: THE BUTTON THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO SAVE — BUT TRIGGERED DISASTER. April 26, 1986. Inside Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, operators hit AZ-5 — the emergency shutdown. It should’ve killed the reaction instantly. Instead… it spiked it. 211 control rods rushed in — but their graphite tips briefly increased reactivity before the boron could absorb neutrons. In a reactor already unstable, that split-second flaw acted like a detonator. Power surged. Fuel shattered. Steam exploded. AZ-5 didn’t cause the disaster alone — but in that moment, it pulled the trigger on a broken design. @Meta_current #science #nuclear #chernobyl #physics #reactor

- 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥 𝗢𝗡 𝗔 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥 ⚛️ 🎄 We have all heard of Elf on the Shelf, but have you heard of 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿? No need to move a microreactor every night, no mischief…just reliable, carbon-free power for years to come! Microreactors offer a combination of reliability and operational flexibility that no other small generating system can match. They’ll be able to generate power on a small scale in remote locations, at deployed military installations, and in areas recovering from natural disasters. The best part? Idaho National Laboratory will be building a microreactor on site within the next two years. Japan announced last week they will restart idle reactors and build more plants to avoid new strains on power grids that buckled under heavy demand this summer. It comes more than a decade after the devastating Fukushima disaster. Link in bio to listen to the story. 🎧
