The Julian calendar had a leap year every four years, which resulted in an error of about 11 minutes per year. Over centuries, this error added up, and by the 16th century, the calendar had drifted by about 10 days from the astronomical seasons. To correct this, Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar in October 1582. The new calendar dropped 10 days from the month of October in that year, with October 4 being followed by October 15. Additionally, the Gregorian calendar refined the leap year rule to eliminate three leap years every 400 years, thereby maintaining greater accuracy in relation to the Earth's orbit around the Sun. The adoption of the Gregorian calendar was gradual. Catholic countries like Spain, Portugal, and Italy adopted it immediately, but many Eastern Orthodox countries continued to use the Julian calendar for a long time.
