The kids at Edison Elementary School know how it’s done! 🙌 Our Zero Waste team helped make sure they put liquids, food, recyclables, and trash in the right bin.

Most people want to recycle correctly but they were never shown how. Start small. Perfection isn’t the goal, better habits are. One habit I started: rinsing recyclables before tossing them. And remember: WHEN IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT. Happy World Recycling Day!

Common NOs we see in blue bins 🚫: 🛍️ Plastic bags (including Amazon and other packaging — don’t bag recyclables!) 🍕 Greasy pizza boxes 🍓 Plastic produce containers (like berry clamshells) 🥤 Plastic cups 🥚 Styrofoam 🍔 Aluminum trays and foil 🏠 Air filters 🌳 Landscaping 🫙 Glass (take bottles, jugs and jars to our drop-off locations: gilbertaz.gov/Recycle) YEAH! These belong in your blue bin ✅: 🥛 Plastic bottles, jugs and jars 🥫 Metal food and beverage cans 📦 Cardboard 📃 Paper (not shredded, soiled, metallic, waxed, or tissue) Save this list for later! Skip this recycling faux pas. 🚫 Don’t bag it. Recyclables should be placed loose in your cart. Bags can tangle in sorting equipment, causing failures at recycling centers.

We get that recycling rules can be confusing, but we are here to help! ♻️ Three things to know: 1. Do not put plastic bags, films, or wraps in the blue recycling cart. Collect them and return them to participating grocery stores—most offer bag recycling. 2. Do not bag recyclables in plastic garbage bags before placing them in your blue recycling cart. Bagged recyclables often end up in the landfill, wasting valuable materials. 3. Even small amounts of food or liquid can contaminate your blue recycling cart and may cause recyclables to be sent to the landfill. Please give bottles and cans a quick rinse and empty out food containers before placing them in the cart. No need to overdo it — just a light rinse will help while still conserving water.
