A few different log home builds we have recently done using Wester Red Cedar Logs. After we complete the Handcrafted Log Home construction at our building facility the logs are labeled and disassembled to be loaded onto transport trailers then delivered to the home owners building sites around the world. When the shipment arrives the log home is reassembled onto the prepared foundations and subfloor. #milwaukeetools #loghome #loghouse #luxurylogcabin #logcabins #wood #westernredcedar #loghomebuilder #dreamloghome #timber #buildingyourdreamfromnature #customhomes #luxuryhomes

The Git Hoan Dancers (People of the Salmon) from Metlakatla/Seattle are known for their theatrical performances and put on incredible shows during Celebration in Juneau. David R. Boxley @davidrobertboxley said the group has about 50 masks, most of which his father David A. Boxley carved throughout the past few decades. The father and son carvers aim to make the pieces look like ones Tsimshian people have been using for generations. “Git Hoan is a projection of the pride that my dad has wanted our people to feel,” said the younger David. “All my life, we just want our people to be proud of who they are.” Many of the larger masks have their own custom-built cases to protect them during transportation and are barged up on a van to prevent damage. #Tsimshian #Tlingit #Haida #AlaskaNative #Indigenous #Celebration2024

It was undoubtedly a more enjoyable chewing experience than the sawdust bread, but I really can’t decide how much cedar flavor I was ACTUALLY tasting. Don’t worry, we’re going to find a way to make some wood flavored bread come hell or high water. #wood #trees #woodworking #baking #bread

Western Red Cedar 🌲 I can’t talk about the Western Red Cedar without acknowledging it’s cultural importance. I’ve done so much research on this tree, especially when it comes to its uses within indigenous culture because it really is incredible. The Western Red Cedar bark/wood is used for canoes, clothes, baskets, paddles, rope, medicines, furniture, and much more. It’s such a beautiful tree and we’re so lucky that our forests here are dominated by them! During my work as a research technician this past summer, I was lucky to work in an area with a lot of cultural history and I witnessed a lot culturally modified Western Red Cedars from many many years ago. “Modified” just means the trees were altered through sustainable harvesting techniques that have been practiced and passed down through many generations. Just some proof that these cultures have lived in these environments and on this land for many many generations. . This video takes place on the unceded shared territory of the Squamish Nation and Lil’wat Nation. #westernredcedar #redcedar #trees #naturelovers #macandtrees #naturetalk #naturewalk #outdoorcontent #natureeducation #educational #neature #rainyseason #arcteryxbc #arcteryx

Western Redcedar’s like this beauty here are incredibly resilient, able to live well over a thousand years in really wet environments, and they’re able to do so because they are incredibly resistant to rot, fungus and disease. Western Redcedar, Thuja plicata, is part of the Cupresscae family, which includes trees like Junipers, Sequoias, Cypress and Sugi, and this is a shared characteristic with all these trees, made possible thanks to the volatile oil or tropolone-related compound present in their wood known as thujaplicin. Thujaplicin is one of the many chemical compounds in these trees that gives them their pleasant and very distinct aroma, while also deterring insects, fungus and bacteria from decaying the wood. It’s produced within the Cambium layer of the tree and is more present in the bark and sapwood layers, but not so much in the heartwood of the tree, and thats why when these ancient trees do begin to rot out, its usually some sort of heart rot that attacks this older, deeper wood first where thujaplicin isn’t as concentrated to form cavities and openings that creates habitat for all sorts of critters. Because of its antiseptic and antifungal properties, thujaplicin or derivatives have been used by humans all over the world in things ranging from face creams to toothpaste, and even to prevent foods from browning and going bad. So overall, its a pretty dang unique trait thats evolved over millions of years of trees just being trees and finding ways to prevent rot, insects and disease from breaking them down, so that they can keep on keeping on!
