When we were first introduced to Keisuke, I genuinely couldn’t stand him but Shigeno made that intentional. In a 2025 interview, he mentions how the Redsuns were clearly meant to be positioned as villains and come off as irritating as they looked down on the Akina Speedstars. What makes Keisuke so great is that he doesn’t stay there. By the end of Initial D, he becomes one of the most respected characters in the whole series. That is real character development. Sometimes the best-written characters are the ones you dislike first, because when they finally earn your respect, it feels deserved. This battle, near the end of First Stage, feels like one of the first real shifts in how we see him. Before this, we got flashes of who Keisuke could become, like when he stands in the road and talks to Takumi about what it means to be a street racer. But here, it starts to feel different. He stops feeling like just another opponent Takumi will leave behind. Honestly, I thought Keisuke was going to get pushed aside like Takumi’s other First Stage opponent. And seeing someone other than Takumi get a win in the series great to see. Looking back, it almost feels like a small hint of how much Keisuke would grow by the end of Initial D. Also, shoutout to Nakazato for somehow making it through the race without hitting the guardrail.
