For the love of our ocean 💌 This Ocean Month and beyond, we’re reminded of the incredible, life-sustaining biodiversity of our ocean. From coral reefs to the high seas, marine ecosystems are the foundation for much of the natural world. As the climate crisis intensifies, our ocean feels the brunt of the impacts, throwing these delicate systems off balance. The implications could upend life as we know it. We are forever grateful to our seas for holding us in moments of need and providing endless inspiration. We can only hope to give a fraction of the same love and care back in return. Look into my eyes 👀. There are many ways to stow your scuba tank. This one a bit impractical but fun to do when your on your safety stop to really feel like you’re floating. I always think of diving as the closest I will ever get to floating in space. Thanks @dive.with.mel for the video.

This underwater speaker is playing a song that’s bringing coral reefs back to life! Tell me your best guess of what song it is? So healthy coral reefs are full of sounds from all the wonderful marine life in them, and these sounds attract young fish and coral larvae. But when reefs are damaged, they go silent. So scientists from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution worked out that if they played the sounds of healthy reefs near damaged ones, it actually tricked fish and coral into returning to these areas. And it actually worked! In the Caribbean, they placed coral larvae on underwater speakers playing reef sounds and compared it to a control group nearby with no sound. They found that coral exposed to healthy reef sounds settled 70% more often, and in some spots, up to 700% more! Coral reefs are among the most biodiverse habitats on the planet, but over the last 30 years, 25% of them have vanished and many more are in poor health So simple solutions like this could help us initiate and accelerate reef recoveries! #goodnews #coral #reefs #savethereef #ocean #conservation

Just keep swimming 🪸 Clownfish and anemone are dependent on each other for survival. Anemone provide a shelter for clownfish from predators, while clownfish give anemone key nutrients from their waste in a symbiotic relationship 🫶 #EarthCapture by @riki.grim . . . . #Clownfish #Anemone #Reefs

This is the infamous crown-of-thorns #starfish. It's named for these semi-flexible spines that cover its whole body. The crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS) is a well-known coral #predator. When its primary predator, the giant triton sea snail, is overfished, there can be large outbreaks that cause severe damage to #reefs. A healthy #coralreef will usually recover from a COTS outbreak...but will take between 10 to 20 years to do so. Reefs suffering from other stressors may not recover at all. Despite this, COTS play a valuable role in reef #ecosystems by helping to maintain coral species diversity; they usually prey on fast-growing #corals, creating space for other slow-growing corals to thrive. Pufferfish may look a bit quirky, but they have sup-EYE-powers! 🐡 The most notorious fact about pufferfish is their unique ability to inflate their body by inhaling air or water to grow in size and protrude their spines, but one of the more distinctive characteristics of the puffer is the wide-set and bulging eyes. Puffers have very sharp vision. It is an important survival strategy that helps them spot small prey and allows them to identify potential threats from farther away. 👀 #FrostScience #ItsScienceMiami ——————————————————— #pufferfish #aquarium #reefs #marinelife #sea #ocean #oceans #marinebiology #fishes #tropicalfish #blue #water #underwaterphotography #underwater #coralreefs #floridascoralreef #corals #fish #eel #pufferfish #seafloor #miamilife #miami #frostmuseum #downtownmiami

In the frame is one of the most common: the grey reef shark. They patrol coral reefs at around 25 km/h but accelerate to 40 km/h in 2 seconds when attacking. They have no swim bladder—if a shark stops moving, it sinks. So they swim even while sleeping, shutting down half their brain at a time. Grey reef sharks return to the same reef for years—they have territorial attachment like house cats. Video author unknown.
