He lunges in with a straight leg AT the Goalkeeper He goes over the top of the ball (barely touching it) He makes contact with the keepers right ankle He makes contact with the bottom of the foot/studs These types of challenges need to be discouraged and his leg brushing the top of the ball doesn’t mitigate the offense. I understand if you go with a reckless tackle here- but all the elements needed for a Serious Foul Play Send off are there. What do you think? Calling “careless” fouls is key to match control and credibility on the pitch. I’ve seen too many referees wait for the game to spiral out of control before they decide to get involved. That’s a massive mistake! Soccer is a contact sport and at every level there is a certain expectation for what is accepted by the players in terms of physicality. Learning how to recognize acceptable physical play from a careless foul for a push, trip, pull or charge is fundamental. I encourage all referees to be looking for these careless files and be proactive and making those calls. Set your bar and then be consistent throughout the match. If you do that, you’ll see the game open up and be more enjoyable for the players on the pitch, the coaches and the spectators… you’ll enjoy it as a Referee as well! #soccer #football #referee
