helpful and free art resources incoming 🎨👇🏻 not technically an art “tip” I suppose, but I did want to share some of these incredible and 🚨FREE TO USE 🚨 websites that have been such a godsend for me when seeking inspiration, solid references, etc! ☺️: ✨ APP.POSEMY.ART: features a ton of poses and different model types that you can view, manipulate, and light in whatever way you want! the flexibility is insane and lets you LITERALLY customize poses right down to the fingers; great for dynamic figure, perspective, and light references ✨BETA.FLIM.AI (yes, it is FLIM, not FILM): fully searchable database of movie scenes WITH the color palettes of each shot; you can even search by color; great for composition ideas/references and helpful for maintaining consistent color schemes ✨SKETCHFAB.COM: contains a ton of different 3D models of various subjects (animals, objects, people, you name it) that you can view and rotate in 3D space! there are even animated models that you can pause during different moments in movement; great for perspective/general reference for subjects in different angles that you can’t find in photos 🔔 all of these sites do feature some level of limitation if you do not pay to use them, eg certain “premium” models, a daily usage limit, etc., BUT I also only use what is offered for free and 👏🏻 let me tell ya 👏🏻 all of it is so incredibly generous and helpful as it stands highly recommend checking them out!! Follow me for more cute art ☺️✨ Using references for your art is often seen as cheating by some artists, because….?? I really don’t know why. Referring to a photo or an artist you admire to inspire your art, learn techniques from, or taking photos to improve the details for some parts of your painting is not cheating and only makes your art look more believable, and improves your visual library over time. My favorite places to source for references are: Pinterest: although now it’s overrun with so many ai images, there still are a ton of good references on there and amazing sources of inspiration for character poses, and everything else. Instagram/ Twitter: I like to use these when looking for poses from cosplay artists. I also find amazing artists and learn certain techniques from them for drawing poses and painting. Artstation: I mostly use this when searching for something specific or making character sheets and much more detailed images for concept art and other projects. Where do you get your own references? For OCs I still do the same thing. As you make drawings of them, add it to the reference pile. Circle and cross out things that do and don't work, take notes. Create expression sheets, and turnarounds. Use grids to draw them in turnaround poses to get consistent proportions. And take note of where features sit when drawing new poses. If they're inspired by anything or anyone, have a section for that as well.
