I don’t feel scarred for life” - great, hopefully you are a well adjusted adult and your parents found other ways to remind you that you matter and are loved. 🛑 For those of you who recognize the problem with speaking to children in this way, what do you tell yourself about this now and how do you relate to your parents as a result? 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Growing up believing your parents are god-like and can “do no wrong” creates an internal conflict when they say and do hurtful things and you don’t know how to feel about it. You think “this is for my own good”, and eventually this can become how to talk to yourself. Or you see how damaging this is but then feel let down by your parents and carry resentments. 🫸🏽 Sometimes adult children will limit communication with their parents and take a break while they figure out the best way to move forward. This is ok too; if you had emotionally immature parents, they may have prioritized their own needs and emotions over yours, leading to feelings of neglect, guilt, and anxiety you feel as an adult. 🫂 To move forward, it’s essential to acknowledge and accept your parents’ limitations, rather than expecting them to change or apologize.
