Reverse pull headgear or Facemask ! Hello everyone ! Sharing today a case of a kid who met with an accident when he was around 4 years old. A large metal gate fell onto his face when he was playing around. This severe trauma stopped his maxillary growth. They were referred to me for his maxillary traction. So, thought to brief you about Reverse pull headgear which is also known as Facemask. Reverse pull headgear is an orthodontic appliance used to correct an underbite (Class III malocclusion) by applying a forward force to the upper jaw. It typically consists of a mask with a forehead pad and chin cup, connected by wires to a mouthpiece that fits on the upper back teeth, pulling the jaw forward. This treatment is most effective when started during childhood or early adolescence to guide facial growth. How it works ? Applies anterior force: The headgear exerts a force that pulls the upper jaw (maxilla) forward. Allows mandibular rotation: This encourages the lower jaw to rotate downward and backward, increasing lower facial height. Corrects bite: The overall effect helps to move the upper teeth forward and the lower teeth backward, correcting the bite and creating a positive overjet. Most effective in growing children: It is most effective during the growth period, especially in early and late mixed dentition, to correct the skeletal discrepancy. Components :- Face mask: A frame worn on the face that includes a forehead pad and a chin cup. Wires: Connect the face mask to the intraoral appliance. Intraoral appliance: A mouthpiece or bands that attach to the upper back teeth. Elastics: Rubber bands are used to generate the necessary traction. Usage and care :- Wear time: An orthodontist will provide specific instructions on how long to wear it each day. Typically should be worn for maximum of 14-16 hours daily. Eating: The headgear must be removed for eating and drinking. Soreness: Some soreness in the teeth and jaw is normal after wearing it, but it usually subsides after a couple of hours.

Facemask therapy, also known as reverse-pull headgear, is an orthodontic treatment used primarily to correct Class III malocclusion caused by a retrusive (underdeveloped) maxilla. Purpose: Stimulate forward growth of the upper jaw (maxilla). Used in: Growing children, typically between ages 6–10. Components: Extraoral facemask, elastics, and intraoral appliances like a rapid palatal expander (RPE). Do you use facemask therapy in your orthodontic practise?

Face Mask Therapy (Reverse Pull Headgear)😊 Face mask therapy is a treatment used in orthodontics (braces treatment) mainly for Class III malocclusion, which is commonly called an underbite. 🦷 What is Class III malocclusion? In simple words: The lower jaw is ahead of the upper jaw This makes the chin look more prominent and the upper teeth look “behind” 😷 What is Face Mask Therapy? It’s a special external device (worn on the face) that helps: 👉 Pull the upper jaw forward 👉 Improve the alignment between upper and lower jaws Think of it like gently guiding the upper jaw into the correct position while a child is still growing. 👶 Who needs it? Mostly growing children (6–12 years old) Works best when the bones are still developing Not very effective in adults (because growth is complete) ⚙️ How does it work? A small appliance is fixed inside the mouth (attached to upper teeth) Elastic bands connect this to the face mask worn outside The mask applies gentle forward force on the upper jaw 👉 Over time, this helps the upper jaw grow forward and correct the bite ⏰ How long is it worn? Usually 12–14 hours per day (often at home and during sleep) Treatment may last 6–12 months, depending on the case 👍 Benefits Corrects underbite early Improves facial appearance May avoid surgery later in life 😬 Is it uncomfortable? Initially: mild pressure or discomfort After a few days: most patients adjust well Needs good patient cooperation to work effectively 📌 Simple summary: Face mask therapy is like “pulling the upper jaw forward at the right time” so that the teeth and face develop in a balanced way. #everyone #viralreels #facemask #orthodontics #surat
