AKAR Akar opened in Kuala Lumpur in March 2020, right before pandemic restrictions began in Malaysia. It was a strange time and I think that year was mostly about survival. I visited the restaurant in September 2020 and tbh, I wasn’t particularly blown away. It could have been due to many reasons. And so it hadn’t crossed my mind to revisit until recently. Now that I’ve dined at Akar for a second time, I am convinced that I must now form a new opinion of the restaurant. I am thoroughly impressed. The restaurant underwent a complete redesign in 2024. The dining area is spacious and comfortable. Hot kitchen behind closed doors, but an island bench used primarily for plating manages to be both central yet non-obtrusive to the space. I particularly love the genius of cordoning off a large rectangular room into a smaller one to create a path from the entrance to the dining room. The walk is mysterious and anticipation-building. Guests are welcomed to an altar next to the island bench; on it an array of produce featured in the menu. “Mekar” (Malay for “bloom”) is the name of the tasting menu, launched as part of the 2024 overhaul. I’ve seen modern Malaysian restaurants get lost trying to recreate or reinterpret classic dishes and flavours. Akar 2.0 steers clear of this. There was identity, consistency, purpose to the dishes. And they were delicious. I enjoyed 9 out of 10 courses (not including 5 petit fours). Also @vivianwong0.o is a great somm, her knowledge of wine and local spirit pairings spot on. I was full, an equally important barometer of satisfaction at a fine diner. I believe that the best kind of chefs keep evolving and progressing, gathering and building a strong team along the way. I’m delighted to have a home grown talent like @aidanlowyx amongst those pushing Malaysia’s dining scene forward.
