🔊 Sound up for this one… 🦏 A black rhino warning charge during a #FGASA NQF4 assessment, and a great example of calm, correct handling. The vehicle was stationary, the rhino approached us, snorting and doing short rushes, typical black rhino warning behaviour when they’re unsure or trying to test boundaries. When he got a bit too close, the guide simply started the vehicle and gave a short verbal warning. That was enough, the rhino got the message and moved off once he realised he couldn’t bully the vehicle. Good guiding is not about bravado, it’s about reading behaviour, staying composed, and giving the animal the space and respect it deserves. I’ve spotted a lot of rhinos before. I haven’t seen many with two legs not four. __ Actually, that’s not entirely true, because most of the rhinos I’ve spotted have only got two legs! Anyway - I received this brilliant drawing by someone called @kevinryanimal, but it was so long ago that it looks like the account no longer exists. Chamboi has always felt the need for speed. Earlier this week, just for the fun of it, he made a grand entrance to mud bath. The most precious video you will see today. Rose’s baby, now just over 3 weeks old, is already enjoying the delights of a mud wallow. His mom took him to the shallow end, but he made sure to fully immerse himself, rolling onto his side, coating his face, and learning not to inhale the mud and water. Meanwhile, Rose rested quietly next to him, enjoying a few moments of peace and quiet while her little boy kept himself entertained for quite a while, as rangers watched in awe close by. After a while she walked out closely followed but her little one. I am coming mom!🦏❤️ A rhino calf just a few hours old, bravely struggling to take its very first steps as it follows its mother up a hill. An incredibly heartwarming and unforgettable sighting, and without a doubt the smallest rhino calf I’ve ever seen @malamalagamereserve Video was taken more than a year ago. Poaching remains one of the greatest threats to these incredible animals, driven by the illegal demand for their horns and the devastating impact of organized wildlife crime across Africa.
