There is a quiet mythology carried in the curve of a rhino’s horn, a structure so often mistaken for weaponry when it is, in truth, an extension of being, a filament of compressed time, grown slowly from the same substance as hair and yet bearing the weight of an entire species’ survival. It does not seek conflict. It does not hunger for dominance. It simply exists as a threshold, a boundary between vulnerability and presence, between the small, trembling body of the calf and the vast, unspoken authority of the mother. Under the safe protection of mum’s huge, almost mythical horn, the world arranges itself differently. Danger softens at the edges. The wind carries less urgency. What appears to us as defence is, to the calf, something closer to shelter, a moving architecture of safety, held not in walls but in flesh and instinct. This a living Pokémon called a Pangolin. They’re one of my favorite animals and one I’ve never seen in real life. Also the most illegally trafficked animal on earth. So endangered. Hodati uz bijelog nosoroga, u tišini afričke zemlje, jedno je od onih iskustava koja te zauvijek promijene. U Mosi oa Tunya nacionalnom parku u Zambiji, gdje se rijeka Zambezi razlijeva i šumi, koračati nekoliko metara od ove veličanstvene životinje znači svjedočiti čistoj snazi i miru prirode. Gledao sam ih kako se kreću polako, s dostojanstvom koje samo priroda zna dati. Njihova koža, tvrda poput kamena, a oči mirne, blage, kao da znaju više o svijetu nego mi ikada hoćemo. I onda te zaboli spoznaja da ovakvih trenutaka možda uskoro više neće biti. Da se njihova vrsta topi pred našim očima. Bijeli nosorozi danas su među najugroženijim životinjama planeta. Više od dvije tisuće ubijeno je u posljednjih nekoliko godina. Krivolovci ih love zbog roga, dijela tijela koji vrijedi više od zlata. Na crnom tržištu kilogram nosorogovog roga doseže cijenu i do 60 tisuća dolara. Nedavno su ovdje u Zambiji ubili trogodišnje mladunče. Dijete prirode koje nije stiglo ni odrasti, ni naučiti život. Sve zbog pohlepe čovjeka koji misli da ima pravo uzeti ono što mu ne pripada. Čovjeka koji vidi vrijednost samo u novcu, a ne u životu. Dok ih gledam kako pasu travu i dišu taj teški, polagani zrak savane, u meni se miješaju divljenje i tuga. Divljenje prema snazi prirode, tuga prema slabosti čovjeka. Oni su stariji od naših civilizacija, preživjeli su tisuće godina evolucije, ledena doba, suše, a sada ih ubijamo mi, najpametnija vrsta na Zemlji. Svaki trenutak proveden uz njih podsjetnik je koliko smo izgubili osjećaj poštovanja prema životu. Ako jednog dana nestanu, nestat će s njima i dio nas. I visited Kruger National Park this weekend and it was heartwarming to catch up with some of the rangers. After many bad years, and a horrific loss of rhinos to poaching, it feels like real change is in motion... The first year of polygraphs being rolled out in an effort to remove the rot, and back in September two traitors were convicted to 20 years! This sends out a crystal clear message in this war on greed and corruption. We cannot thank the honest and hard working rangers enough for persevering through it all. What they’ve gone through is unspeakable. Some really good news is that @unitedforwildlife recently launched unprecedented support for rangers in Africa. The ambitious five-year plan will provide 10,000 rangers with access to affordable in-service and medical evacuation insurance cover, together with opportunities for training and leadership development. Thank you to all those brave souls on the frontline, especially over this time of year when poachers are Christmas shopping.
