I always get the RhoGAM shot at 28 weeks then after I give birth for having a RH negative blood type! I am so thankful they have these now it is because what would essentially happen if I were to not get this in my baby had a different blood type than me. as an ICU nurse, you might be surprised to hear that i don’t always follow the “rules” when it comes to standard medical recommendations for my body or my family. Anit-D or rhogam being one them. in my first pregnancy + after a miscarriage, i was told i needed to get it without much further discussion. but when i got pregnant after my miscarriage, i started reading about other women who chose to decline it. + i thought… hmm. maybe this is something worth looking into. i declined rhogam during my third pregnancy + accepted it after birth. my current labs show that i did NOT become sensitized. i appreciate medical guidelines for what they are. recommendations. but they’re not individualized. we’re all different. here are some situations to discuss with your provider ⤵️ 🔹if both you + your partner are Rh-negative, your baby will be Rh-negative. no rohgam needed. 🔹ask for a blood test to determine your baby’s Rh status. if your baby is Rh-negative, no rohgam needed. 🔹if you are certain this is your last baby, there’s no future baby to protect from sensitization. Anti-D Explained + @downtobirthshow episode 211 are two incredibly helpful resources. here are some key takeaways that helped ME make a decision: 🔻rhogam isn’t given to protect the baby in your current pregnancy, it’s meant to protect a future baby. “it’s hard to evaluate the benefits and risks to a fetus when the fetus, who is exposed to the possible risks, won’t experience any physical benefit from it.” 🔻it’s a blood product from pooled donors, + while the risk of infection is low, it’s not zero. 🔻little is known about the effects of rhogam on the developing baby. statements like “available evidence does not suggest harm”, “no controlled studies in human pregnancy” are vague + may be based on a lack of data, not proven safety. 🔻there are listed adverse reactions that I didn’t want to risk happening to me while pregnant. it is important that you are provided resources, clear, thorough, + individualized information, not just being told what to do. tell me your experience with being offered rohgam. ⬇️ 📌Save this post to refer back to, or send it to an RH-negative mama!

The question I ask myself with any intervention is “If God designed birth to happen this way, did He make a mistake? Or are we misunderstanding His design?” Did you know this information when told to get the RhoGAM shot?

And as always, not medical advice, always talk to your trusted provider. These are just things that I would not decline during my pregnancy or postpartum. Ultimately whatever choice you made I will respect you and be completely non-judgmental because I think we all come from different places and arguing or shaming never helps anyone.
