Caption and Video by @abyssdivecenteramed A beautiful adult male ribbon eel in open water, looking for a new home! How do we know it’s a male? Easy! Ribbon eels are a very singular marine species. All individuals start off their lives as males. They are born black with a yellow dorsal fin. The black turns to blue when they become mature males. And finally, towards the end of their lives, when they reach a size of about 1 meter long, they turn completely yellow and transform into females. At that point, they will only live long enough to lay their eggs, and then they die. Which is why they are called protandric, a type of life cycle they only share with clownfish. Also, seeing them in open water is pretty rare, as they prefer to live in a cosy hole, with their head sticking out, waiting for a pray to be foolish enough to get too close. #adventureglobal ---------------------------------------------- Follow @adventureglobal [+165k] for more... The Ribbon Eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita) is one of the ocean’s most mesmerizing shape-shifters. All are born as males, starting life black with a yellow dorsal fin. As they mature, they turn a vibrant electric blue, and later, some transition into brilliant yellow females. Often seen peeking from sandy burrows, they sway like ribbons in the current, waiting to ambush passing prey. A living rainbow that tells the story of transformation beneath the waves. 💙💛🖤✨

Free-swimming ribbon eels are rare to see, and getting both the black-and-yellow and the blue-and-yellow phases in one video is incredible. Here are some simple fun facts: 1. Ribbon eels change colour as they grow. They start black with a yellow stripe, turn bright blue with a yellow mouth as males, and eventually become fully yellow when they transform into females. 2. Their open mouth isn’t aggression. It’s how they breathe and taste the water for food. 3. Seeing them out in the open is unusual. Ribbon eels normally stay hidden in sandy burrows with just their heads showing. 4. They’re small, fast hunters that snatch tiny fish and shrimp with quick strikes. 5. Despite their delicate look, ribbon eels can live for up to 20 years in the wild. 6. Their colours aren’t electric, but they certainly look like it. The bright patterns help warn predators to avoid them. Keywords: ribbon eel, moray eel, ocean life, marine animals

Moray eels have terrible eye-sight and rely heavily on their incredible sense of smell to catch their prey. Nocturnal by nature it is not common to see moray honeycombs like this out and about during the day, which is such a shame as their swimming and body movement is so mesmerising to watch. Although their snake like bodies and sharp jagged teeth are intimidating on the eye, moray eels are in general, actually very gentle and relaxed creatures. Only ever really causing harm when disturbed or feeling threatened. The more time I spent with these ocean dragons the more I appreciate them and their surprisingly calm and often soft personalities. #morayeel #honeycombmorayeel #eel #marinelife
