🚨 Here’s something every teacher and parent needs to know: When a child with ADHD or dyslexia is struggling to get ideas from their brain onto paper, giving them a bunch of suggestions doesn’t always help—it can actually make it worse. Why? Because their brain is already working overtime. Kids with ADHD often experience something called working memory overload—they’re juggling focus, regulation, spelling, organizing thoughts, and motor output all at once. When you add rapid-fire questions or multiple ideas on top of that, it overwhelms their system. And for kids with dyslexia, language processing delays can mean they need extra time just to interpret and organize what’s being said. So instead of support, too many prompts can feel like pressure—and they shut down. What helps instead? Give space. Ask one open-ended question at a time. Let them talk it out or draw it first. Offer voice-to-text or scribe support. Compassion + strategy = success. Some performers don’t like phones out during their set, there have been times when fans were asked to put them down, Not Geoff, but I appreciate when musicians are more tolerant bc I do do it for a reason. After covid I went two years without ever really leaving my house. Once quarantine was lifted I developed an unreasonable fear of leaving. I would think of all the possible ways I could die by going from point a to point b, which led me into anxiety attacks a lot. During this point I researched ways to get over that fear which led me to an online community of others in the same position. Eventually live music came back too, and I had always loved going to shows. When I saw that two of my top artists were touring together and coming to town, I bought tickets. Even though I was in a small crowded venue I finally felt more myself and alive than I had in a very long time. But others were still struggling. I started filming the shows and posting them and others from the online community would reach out thanking me for posting them since they hadn’t seen live shows in so long, some even said it made them want to go out to one themselves. That gave me an idea. I could keep filming for ppl who couldn’t go out or those who were homebound for any other reason and hope that it would either help or bring them joy.
